Use your Thieves/Ninjas, and don't have your power house god-mage, Luc, attack when the enemy is going to counter him.
Take it with a BIG grain of salt, 'cause I have this vague memory about it.
Edit: I'm obviously talking about perma death - not the war battles.
I have absolutely no idea where you read that. Army battles are like the defining trait of the entire Suikoden franchise and have featured prominently in every single trailer for the Remastered collection of Suikoden 1 and 2. Nothing's been removed from these remasters, let alone something as important and integral as the army battles.
The only character I ever lost was Eileen, Lepant's wife, and that's because the charge isn't a 100% counter. When the enemy chooses archers, they deal damage back, unlike when they charge face first into Luc's magic, or they try to cast in the face of a rain of arrows.
Oh, well that makes a lot more sense then. The only change that I've seen so far with that kind of impact has been the optional removal of event timers. But I could definitely see them potentially making permadeath an aspect of the difficulty settings, present on normal and hard, no permadeath on easy. We'll find out in just a few hours at this point.
Maybe my memory is hazy back in 2001.
I was only like 7years old but I'm pretty sure all the Army Battle in both S1 and S2 are easy.
