tips for new players
this website will guide you for everything

https://suikosource.com/

when you enter the website on your left you will see a list of suikoden series from 1 to 5

star of destiny will show you a list of 108 characters and how to get them for each game

walkthrough will give you a detailed walkthrough step by step it will highlight the items you will get in your current area either from treasure chests or hidden in bookshelf or other objects it will also highlight the characters that you can recruit in your current area

gameplay guides have a lot of lists like Bestiary list it will show you the enemies list in order from the start of the game to end and their drop list, and also will show you Equipment list, rune list, where to buy them or where they drop and also will show you Unites Guide for all characters combination attack, Rune magic can also unites, in order to use unites magic 2 characters must cast 2 level 4 different elemental spells in the same round

here is a list for unit magic

https://suikosource.com/runes/unitemagic.php

the best unite magic is water+lighting it will deal 2000 damage to enemy and heal, revive, cure stats of all party members
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
you can ignore everything and do your thing and or you can follow this recommendation

for suikoden 1

characters combination attack

https://suikosource.com/games/gs1/guides/unites.php

Bestiary

https://suikosource.com/games/gs1/guides/bestiary.php

buy killer rune from Teien Item Shop for your melee charactors it increase crit attack

for magic characters Equip lighting runes for all but at least Equip 1 character with water rune for area healing, later you can upgrade to thunder rune and flowing rune but they are in end game and very rare (some characters join you Equipped with them)

you can buy lighting rune in Warrior's Village Item shop

thunder rune drop from Simurgh 1% chance in end game Gregminster Area and found 1 in
Shasarazade Treasure chest

flowing rune drop from Siren 0.8% chance in Shasarazade Fortress and found 1 in Cave of the Past Treasure chest
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
for suikoden 2

characters combination attack

https://suikosource.com/games/gs2/guides/unites.php

Bestiary

https://suikosource.com/games/gs2/guides/bestiary.php

melee is better then magic i recommend 6 double beat runes, 6 fury rune, some killer runes for party members who can Equip 3rd rune slot coz not everyone can have 3rd slot for a rune ,but get 6 killer runes anyway, get 1 flowing rune for healing you can buy 1 in Gregminster Rune Shop (rare find)

double beat rune let you attack 2 times with normal attack
fury rune double the damage of normal attack
killer will help you crit

there is specials runes you can equip to your party weapons by using blacksmith Embed option

i recommend Kindness Rune,Friendship Rune,Exertion Rune,Technique Rune

Kindness Rune +1 attack for every hour the party member was in your party maximum 127 attack bonus even if the party member leave and join the party it will not reset only if you remove the rune then it will reset, this rune is found in Lakewest town in a Basket this rune is the best you can get extra by making your castle guardian deity statue and chose plans turtle for head turtle for body and rabbit for legs and unicorn for tail so TTRU

here is a guide on where to get the plans

https://suikoden.fandom.com/wiki/Guardian_Deity#Dragon

the guardian deity gift is only once, you cant change your guardian and get another gift
so do TTRU to get kindness rune

Friendship Rune give you attack bonus of the number of all recruited star of destiny devided by 2, the more you recruit the more attack bonus so at 108 star of destiny you get 54 attack bonus, this rune can be found in South Window town in a small Bonsai tree

Exertion Rune start battle with ATK x1.17 and each turn increase and in 6th round become ATK x2 this rune can be found in Kobold Village in Vase in front of the Elders House

Technique Rune 40% chance to steal potch (money) from enemies when you use normal attack ( i recommend using this rune if you want to collect money) i prefer collecting money this way but you can play dice mini game if you want fast money but its boring that way, this rune drop from CutRabbit in overworld outside kyaro town

from start of the game

get 6 double beats rune they drop from CutRabbit in North Sparrow Passage this place will be blocked later you cannot enter here till end game so make sure you get 6 double beat runes here

and once you pass North Sparrow Passage and arrive in the overworld dont enter kyaro town coz your party will disband and you need them to help you to farm money and Technique Rune which will drop from, CutRabbit in kyaro area overworld map so get 6 Technique Rune from them and farm for money

only enter kyaro town if you have 6 double beats rune and 6 Technique Rune and 122400 potch which will help you buy 12 winged boots from kyaro town

same as suikoden 1 winged boots give 14 defense 10 speed which help with extra normal attack

you cannot come back to this town again it will be blocked

enter kayro town and buy 12 winged boots from rare find, they refresh every 30 min

when you return back to Victor Fort then you will recruit characters then Equip all charactors with double beats and winged boots and Technique Runes

then when you go Ryube Forest get 6 killer runes from woodpeckers and same Equip all killers runes to your standby charactors coz you will need to free bag space

later you will go to Muse town you need to buy 6 Fury runes from the rune shop here, and Muse town will be blocked later you cannot come back till end game so make sure to buy 6 fury runes you can collect money fighting and stealing money with Technique Runes and selling monsters drops

you can buy ninja armor in coronet town which is south of Muse it give 17 defense and +15 SPD not everyone can equip it

as you progress in the game you will go to Cave of the Wind Griffin here will drop wind hat which give you huge defense boost 24 defense and +7 speed, once you finsh Cave of the Wind the monsters will never respwan again, so make sure you get 6 wind hats here

once you have your own castle you can play climb the rope game for a prize armor called
Taikyoku Wear it give 40 defense +10 SPD not everyone can equip it

you can also check this link here for a list of where to find cooking recipes, livestocks, old books, etc

What ridiculous overkill for a newcomer. This is advice for people on their 3rd or 4th playthrough looking to really overthink basically everything. These games are not hard enough, and not complex enough, to need that level of over planning.

thats why i said you can ignore everything and do your thing, its only recommendition
It's a pointlessly over complex recommendation, regardless of your stance on should people take the advice or not. It's like if I suggested someone playing final fantasy 9 for the first time take the extra effort to get the Excalibur 2 it would be about as overly and needlessly thorough for a "newcomer" and actual newcomers should be aware of how utterly overkill your advice is.

Here's the real advice for newcomers: if you want to see the true endings in a single playthrough I advise following a spoiler free recruiting guide and to be diligent to get recruits as soon as possible. That's it. That's the advice. Otherwise have fun, expect having to do multiple playthroughs otherwise, but also know that that's not a bad thing.

I have to agree to this. linking all the sources that are not spoiler free is just saying "hey newcomers, here's every type of spoiler possible. hope you don't enjoy storylines." Recommending finding a spoiler free recruit guide for those that MUST get the true ending their first playthrough, yeah I guess. Personally, I just say "play the game once, experience it fresh like you would have with the original" because it'll give you the most genuine experience with them both. The nice thing about owning them...you can always play them again later if you need/want to :)

Yeah, ideally people wouldn't feel the need to automatically find a guide... but as someone that actually has written guides for games, and sorta Suikoden 2 at that, it's just how people are. I'd hope no newcomers sit there farming six 1% drops off enemies right at the beginning of the game but there will definitely be some small subset of people that read the OP and thought "oh hell yeah, that's exactly the kind of advice I wanted to see" and that sucks because holy hell is it boring to farm double beat runes and casually it's so damned unnecessary.
Some people like to overpower themselves early. But yeah, this is probably more for vets who know the games ins and outs already
good thread i'm kinda newbie because the last time i played suikoden was 15 years already. forgotten what the game is about besides the character names like jowy, luca and nanami HAHAHAh
I definitely agree, this is the type of game that's more fun to go in blind and see what you can do on your own, but if getting the best ending to you , or getting a perfect run on your first attempt is your little fault with Perfection. I think OP provides the perfect source that gives you all the information you need to make sure you dont miss anything or anyone.

Just as other users said, if you plan on using a guide, particularly for character recruitment, the story will get spoiled most likely, so be forewarned.

"Tips" for newcomers :
Full walkthrough, guides and more.

That's certainly a way to understand the word "tips".

It's probably more for a very rare tyoe of player who wants to do all their games immediately following every directions from guides, than for "newcomers" I'd say.

I have a life, a job, and family obligations. I don't have time to play long JRPGs multiple times, so I'm exactly the type of player who prefers to use a guide the first time, and every time. I've got enough on my plate without worrying about if I missed a super awesome item 10 hours back that would have made my playthrough infinitely easier.
Thanks, OP. Unlike some people in this thread, my time has value, so this is exceptionally helpful.
As a completionist, I thank you for your efforts OP!

This is an RPG that is friendly to people who don't have much free time. Both games combined you are looking around 60 hours total not each. Op's advice is solid but it is a min max guide. I'd honestly suggest just enjoy the game. It isn't a time sink like Pathfinder games for instance.

Well, just so you know, these suikoden games are extremely easy. You will get through them much faster without constantly reading what to do next. You'll save yourself a lot of time, and it will feel less like homework and more like just playing a game casually enjoying the story and gameplay. You don't need anything special to make quick work of these games. Ive played them all, and never found all 108 characters in a single one of them lol. There's no super hard end game bosses for challenges. Its just a simple, relatively short arpg that is quite addictive and fun. Suikoden2 is my favorite rpg of all time. No need for following a guide to make it easier or faster. It will only make everything take longer actually.
