Welcome to the club!
Awesome!
https://www.metacritic.com/search/suikoden/
why is it the highest rated????? lol. sounds like most of you Suikoden players were intimidated by the game....
At a quick glance, I'd say it's because:
1) It has 23 Critic Reviews, meaning 23 reviews Konami paid people to make to make the game seem better than it was.
2) It has 125 User Ratings.
Compare it to, say, Suikoden II which has:
1) 8 Critic Reviews (it came out towards the tail end of Playstation and was never properly advertised, so I suppose Konami didn't bothering paying critics to review it).
2) 337 User Ratings. Almost three times as many as Suikoden III.
Taking a closer look at the two, there are far fewer Red/Yellow reviews/ratings for Suikoden II than there are for III. In other words, fewer players rated Suikoden III than they did II, but more of them rated III poorly than they did II.
The data speaks for itself if you do more than look at the average.
Like I said, it's rated higher because of the average.
Suikoden III's Critic Review score average is 8.6, and it's User review score is 8.7. Mind you, that's with fewer reviews.
Suikoden II's Critic Review score average is 8.2, and it's User review score is 8.9. Again, there are FAR more reviews from players than critics here, and they're overwhelmingly positive.
It's not hard to see the trend. Fewer people played III. It's score is dependent entirely on critic reviews, and we know how gaming companies turn them into shills for freebies.
Actual user scores tell the story.
I believe that Suikoden III's score would have been more reflective of how people actually felt about it had it been released in Europe when it first came out back in 2002, instead of finally as a PS2 classic in 2015.
Me, personally, I liked 3 for being so damned weird and different when compared to the others in the series in the way the story was told. That being said, I can understand why it wasn't everyone's cup of tea.
