All of that true and very well told.
Alas, I would add something. That was an era when Internet was not there or just starting...meaning there were no videos -dont even think about youtube- or guides to be checked. You had to rely on people who had played the game or *paper* guides usually coming along with some console magazine.
Why do I say all of that?
Because that means that you would not be getting all 108 characters on a first playthough and you would get one of the endings. But boy oh boy there were other/s and they felt truly rewarding when you got them.
Crazy as it sound I can relate to that
After playing a...ahem...pirate copy of S1 and loving it I tried to buy the game a couple of years later, but then it was S2 the one being sold, which I bought and still hoard. Years later I got S1 in a ebay auction too (the first thing I bought in ebay) around 2001 but the price was reasonable (around 45 euros).
and yeah I also have a friend with luck as superpower and bought a S1 copy for one freaking euro in a second hand store by the time prices had already gone mad. And worse, he doesnt even like suikodens, he just sold it again for a small fortune.
This is the correct answer.
S1 holds a special place for me and prefer it but S2 definitely improves with the dash not taking a rune spot and some other things but overall S1. Maybe my thoughts might change now playing S2 again.
I think what ruined S2 was speed rushing for the Clive event as well. I couldn’t relax. And I have FOMO and was short on time with study to replay it.
The story of 1 is very simple and linear, I think is the one needing a remake the most, in contrast, Suiko 2 aged very well.
Edit: forgot to mention that I played both games back in the time when they was released and Suiko 1 already was an odd game in a bad way, constantly I see people commenting but some games already was bad back then.
but love both equaly
Between 1 and 2 though -> Suikoden II > Suikoden I. I specifically like the McDohl name and lore in 1, but I really like the ability for the McDohl hero to show in Suikoden II.
