The bad thing about old games is....
You have to constantly look at guide while playing

That's sucks

Or you could just...play the game?

Why do you even need a guide for this game? Even looking for characters, richmond is your in game go to

Richmond is only your go to in the second, the first has no Private Eye character and is far more difficult to obtain the all 108 stars, especially Crowley and Pesmerga.

A bad thing for you, maybe.

I've been used to it since the 80s. I like 100%'ing games whenever possible. (Maybe not every game, but ones I really like.)

I didn't remembered if Richmond also gave hints about stars that you didn't collected and I omited him, since I already played the game a dozen of times I already know the recruit location of them by head lol.

When I was a kid I was able to get every character without a guide, but this was also when I was a kid with basically nothing but free time. I would go back to every city, every dungeon, after basically every event trying to see if there were things I missed. Story happened in city F? Time to revisit City A-E and every dungeon in between.

Not going to lie, I will absolutely be using a guide instead this time. Adult me knows how stupidly tedious that was and has no idea how kid me did not go slightly insane from it.

It is true though, a lot of older games stuck in really obscure secrets or time gated events in order to get you to buy guides. Breath of Fire 2 is a good one for that. The convoluted steps to get Township to fly would be really hard to figure out without a guide. Even worse, if you went to your town after a certain point in the game without enough money to pay for the towns expansion...that was it. You lost it forever. There was no warning at all, you just lose out if you didn't happen to have enough money in your inventory that one arbitrary time you walked into your city.

I certainly understand why people would prefer raw runs and not use guides, I prefer it myself, but permanent missable content in games, especially if it means you can't get the good ending, is one of those things that just irks me really badly.

I don't atribuite this for time, but I really don't have the patience for a lot of stuff anymore and I believe that it's the same for people that got older, especially if you encounter the same things in games many and many times.

I don't deal very well with RPG's with random encounters like I used in the past, dungeons without saving and things that forces me to have a long session of gameplay for example and some other stuff.

Somehow I got a perfect playtrough of Suikoden(all 108 ,Pan,Gremio alive) back in 99 when I was 15 years old, I didn't even have access to the internet back then so I was forced to explore every nook and cranny after each story event.

I can see someone using guide for the recruits since some are little puzzling, yet seems simple once you know the requirements (like that 2nd cook in first game where you have to sample the stews in a town before he shows up) One of the old vol. books hints that he specializes in stews and that one town only place where you can actually taste the stews if I recall.

Without a guide you wont be able to recruit 108
Getting all 108 was meant to be special. Do you believe you should be able to do special thing in the game without directions?

I do like making main quest and easy side quest able to be tracked in the new games if the character has the knowledge for the quest.

Collectibles and missable stuff should require guides(directions).

I kinda feel the hand holding makes a lot of folks miss out on the point of the game. It's not a collect-athon, it's a story. Play it, enjoy the story, learn new things with each playthrough (if multiple are desired) and just enjoy it.

Most games are terrified that you might miss content now so there's no hidden corners at all with bright arrows pointing to each individual detail. You don't NEED 108 to beat the game. There are a few different endings. Novel idea in it's time and still novel to this day where people are hand held through so many things.

Back in my PS1 childhood days, we don't need no guide to play and finish a game, we just play, gamers nowadays relly on "What is the best/OP...", just let go and play the game, no holding hand.

And I did it for FF7, Brave Fancer Musashi and Suikoden back then, I would do it again.

Well technically you can achieve all the 3 endings in a single playthrough, but I believe that the game worth a second play, dunno how they will do with the Clive quest since most likely they will remove the Mathilda glitch.

I don't understand why you said its "The bad thing about old games", even in the newer games today have missable things too, some of them need to look at the guide if you want 100% them. I don't know if you are just trying to badmouth the old games or not, but constantly look at guide while playing is not only limited to old games.

This, exactly this. In the childhood days we are just playing the games for fun, not as a perfectionist.
I still play for fun too though this days, rarely play as perfectionist.

Everyone is different. To me that's a big problem with older games in general. And I say this as someone who's been playing games since the mid-80s. These days whenever a play a new (to me) JRPG or other similar game I will pretty much always google to see if anything is missable.
