first game to start at?
Hi, wanna give this series a try and was wondering if all the entries are 1 whole story or is this franchise more like Persona and Shin megami that all are separate?

Not exactly. This game sort of expects you to at least know the characters beforehand. While the previous mainline Nep games are mostly standalone, this game doesn't really feel like that. I do recommend going through the mainline games before playing this one to at least get an idea of the characters.

If you have a PS3, the order would be:

Hyperdimension Neptunia –> Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 –> Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory –> Megadimension Neptunia VII –> Neptunia Sisters vs Sisters (debatably)

If you don't have one, the order would be:

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth 1 –> Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth 2 –> Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth 3 –> Megadimension Neptunia VII –> Neptunia Sisters vs Sisters (debatably)

But I should warn you that both the original Neptunia 1 and its remake is completely standalone and the rest is in the same world.

Though I will warn you that this series leans into the parody side of things, with serious moments sprinkle around. I do recommend trying the first three (either through the remakes or the originals) since they tend to vary in tone.
I'll grab the first remake and see if it's my cup of thee. Will buy the rest if it does, are the others you havent mentioned part of the series too - aside of the 2 bullet hell ones. Might still get those because some bullethells can be fun from time to time.

Remember, the three re;births are remasters of the original games (the original Hyperdimension Neptunia is generally considered pretty bad compared to all the other games, with its sequel being way better, even before being remastered), and if you're going to start anywhere it's re;birth 1 followed by 2 and 3. Then you can move on to VII and then Sisters vs. Sisters.

Re:birth1: good game, simple yet fun mechanics and you get to know the cast, one of the best in my opinion

Re:birth 2 and 3: they are the "cannon" universe lore, not having any relationship with the first game, they tried a serious approach on 2 but the game come back at their roots in 3 (the best Neptunia game).

Megadimension VII (It's Victory part 2, not 7 lol): continuation of Rebirth3 that actually was called Victory.

If you really liked the above: Sisters x Sisters, a game with good ideas but poor implementation and seems rushed, the lore is solid though.

Personal recommendation: 4 Godness online, a spin-off series, not many people liked but I loved, especially because I never cared about the online feature, so it never bothered me.

Hyperdimension Neptunia is actually an all-encompassing game, a multidimensional, multi-universe game that connects everything. It's best to first decide on the game variant you like, whether it's 3rd person shooters, in which case Neptunia Virtual Stars would be the right choice, or turn-based gameplay, then Megadimension Neptunia VIIR would be a very good choice. Focus on the gameplay style you really enjoy, and the game will take care of the rest to show you the best franchise in the world.

It's all multiverse. Same nep, different nep, different reason why they disappear for a bit and pop up back up. You can just raw dog from any entry and be fine.

You're really hyping the series up now hehe. Both genres are fine to me, just that turn based needs to be a bit extra good because it can be a drag if it's missing elements.

Good to hear that's what I did with the legend of heroes series.
