Really wonderful game about language and how different groups use language.
The game is language all the way up.

Chants of Sennaar builds an incredibly charming, engrossing world. Even though this game is only a 6-8 hour experience, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love languages, and this was an incredibly unique game. Decoding each language from context clues, signage and murals made for a really engaging experience, as well as the warmth I felt from connecting each group by translating for them, bringing together a community. It's actually the reason I started learned other languages in the first place, so that really resonated with me.

The mechanics are easy to understand and get a grasp of, and the puzzles weren't difficult but were definitely fun and stimulating, especially on the alchemist's level. The hints button also wasn't too much of a giveaway, only showing me what I could interact with and not how to solve the puzzles or translate anything. I know that some people might prefer a more detailed hint system, but there's really good guides for this game online if you don't have the patience to sit and figure it out. I had to do that once or twice in the second chapter, but generally speaking the game is pretty straight forward.

The art style is quite beautiful, I like how the colour schemes change between the peoples of the tower depending on what layer you're on. and quite honestly the soundtrack is something I'd include in my d&d campaign. It's nice and relaxed with that fantasy feeling.

However, after 100 percenting the game, I don't feel much incentive to play it again. I'm not sure if the intent was to have replay value, considering the story and how it ends, but for my personal enjoyment of games I like to be able to go back at least twice to replay things through. I don't see that happening with this game, as I managed to complete it in one playthrough. But that's the only thing that loses points for me.

overall, despite the short experience, I enjoyed this game through and through. 8.5/10
