it's has single-player and player run servers
Depends on what you think being "back" means. The grappling, core loops, and many of the visual stylings are still there in what's been shown so far, but it's not an MMO with random player encounters. It's a different scope and overall style of game, and isn't necessarily what all WA old-hands are looking for.
Definitely not a scam, unless you're using the term loosely. There are literal scams that can be executed much more quickly and profitably than stringing a niche gaming audience along for 18+ months of developer blog postings ( lostskiesgame.com/news ) and only asking for wishlist clicks.
Still, as with any game, separate your hype from buying decisions: don't pre-order and never assume you'll get any more content for your money than what's there at launch. For this title specifically, read reviews when it *does* launch to make sure the team delivers on the promise that it'll be wholly playable offline or on player-run servers.
Hadn't heard of it before, but after reading about it, it's a similar story. SS2 multiplayer *at launch* depended on centralized infrastructure for the multiplayer mode instead of being player-hosted. Due to poor planning, they didn't have a sustainable way to pay for leasing and/or maintaining the servers required for co-op after the initial sales window ended.
Definitely reinforces why the Lost Skies team is specifically aiming for its multiplayer to *not* be dependent on them or any other third party besides maybe Steam. Like I said, don't buy it blindly on launch: there are plenty of skeptics who will check to make sure they've delivered on it.
