How to get back lost airship?

I'm a little confused as to how I can easily move between the floors of my ship when I am at the dock, but once I am flying, how do I get back to the helm? Trying to jump or grapple between the floors is impossible once you're at full acceleration..

If you fall off your ship and it flies off, is it gone for good?

If you die you will respawn on the ship, if it still exists.

Moving between decks should have stairs, move carefully.

I tried respawning on my ship that was stationary. It murdered me and now my ship is just gone.

Happy to note I remember the stairs in WA being just as janky as here.

I flew down to 950 and my ship disappeared and I kept falling with no bottom. Killed myself and respawn to airship sent me to the ark. At least I saved a backup before doing that.

You can salvage one of the deck sections or replace it with a deck half-plate, which leaves the half of the segment open (rotate with mousewheel). Then you can either place a ladder into the opening to ascend or use a sail mast / crows nest / grapple plank as grapple point to reel yourself up.

Thanks - I created stairs to move between the decks... but I still don't get how I am supposed to get back to my ship unless I die .. If I fall off when the sails are still open and it flies off, does that require me to kill myself so I can get back on board? Because we can't build chests in the Ark, it means our ship(s?) are our only way to keep storage.

Can I create multiple ships and store one "permanently" docked at home to ensure I don't lose my important supplies?

Usually if you fall off while your ship is moving, the death is a given. Respawning through the menu is always an option. When you get a Wing Glider, it can be maneuvered to catch up with the ship and grapple back up. Generally, falling off the ship is not something you're expected to casually do. That's what the walls and railings are made for.

Making multiple ships should be an option. In WA, unregistered ships were an easy pickings for hijackers, but in LS that's not an issue. I don't even think you need to dock it anywhere - just place it somewhere convenient and keep it there. Of course I cannot be 100% certain that ships do not despawn, but it would be quite strange if they would.

They definitely need to tune how much your character gets dragged in the wind, but if you can brush your character up against a deck or panel while trying to grapple back on board, the wind resistance tends to go away and you can get back aboard easier.

Building longer ships (3-4 segments long) makes it easier to do this, since you can typically grapple a part the front and still touch the back of the ship when the line is fully extended.

Yeah, while in dock you should have removed one deck panel to gain access to the lower deck
