Should look like this:

In the process of all this, I discovered an exploit. You can actually glitch yourself through walls by grappling into a crevice too small to fit into and then pressing F a few times. As much as I dislike it, I had to use it to get myself out of this predicament. I glitched outside of the non-climbable walls got to where I thought was past the obstacle, then glitched myself back in.
My suggestion to the devs would be to create some alternate path around these extremely difficult obstacles but design them in a way that the player misses some good (but not critical for progress) loot if they take the easy way. I also think there should be a way to backtrack if the obstacle proves too difficult. In this particular one, once you've lowered yourself into the hole and detached, there is no way to go back.
I had the same issue as you did, and even when I reattempted it knowing to get the momentum I failed again. They should make it easy to get back out the pit to the top to try again vs forcing you to glitch it or to kill yourself
Remember you can hit escape and respawn at your ship at any time, you just lose anything in your bag, so re arrange your good loot to your belt.
