Lost Skies

Are you meant to open your sails manually?
Built ship but it seems you have to open your sails manually? Is that correct? I know we can close them automatically.

May jolly well be something kept from Worlds Adrift, difference being Worlds Adrift was hold to raise sails and here we just tap interact once to open.

It's weird you have to open them manually and can't use helm for that, feels extremely clunky.

I'd also like to be able to open AND close sails from the helm.
Well it's a demo/ work in progress version of the game things might change

Also the thing with sails is it is 100% open or 100% close, making it hard to use sails and manage your speed.

So I would wish the power handle from the helm would allow us to control the sails as well and how much sails we want to manage our speed. This was a problem in Worlds Adrift as well and was the main reason to stop move straight to engines for propulsion and skip sails.
How do you actually get the ship to move? I've opened the sail, got a helm etc but it wont move even if i push the wheel forward or in any direction, brake is off as well and theres even a slight wind behind
Figured it out :)

The inability to adjust the sails from the helm is not that bad in a multiplayer situation, but solo it will be a real problem. I have not made it far enough to get guns for my ship, but that could also be challenging solo.

I constructed the "yacht" template, and put my helm in the cupola (like the millenium falcon), and now when I open the sails I can't get back inside to pilot, and get blown off trying to do so while my ship sails off into the yonder.

I had to force quit so I could reload a previous save and hope it was before I set off (thankfully it was)

I built my first ship like that - with the helm inside the hull. Once I figured out that I'd be running back and forth between the sails and helm I put the helm up top with the sails. Even with an opening in the top deck and stairs it was not ideal. The stairs are a little janky and the character does not walk up and down them smoothly.

Yeah, the sails are manual open, but have a catch release mounted to the wheel to release the rigging so that you can avoid plowing into a cliff. It makes sense to me in terms of how a ship works. It's also true that this makes it annoying to do a solo run with a big ship, but I think that's intended because the game is meant to be played with more people if you're going to have a ship of that size. It seems like a deliberate design choice in that direction....although I imagine people will end up modding solo play features in.

The game could do with a bit more direction on how to arrange a ship's layout logically for people who aren't experienced with ship design, and explaining what all the gauges and dials on the readout do.

For now, it's recommended to place the sails and the wheel on deck for visibility, and cargo and crafting below the deck, like how it would be on a nautical ship.

well, if worlds adrift is anything to go by, you won't have sails for long. you got engines pretty quickly in wa, after just a few islands you had to manage with sails. and once you had them, sails became mostly obselete, a backup at best for when the engines got eaten by mantas for example,

There's bunches of QOL things they could do. This is a demo, give honest feedback and see what happens. I'd also like build from storage and sort buttons.

I would like to see sails opening/closing work similar to Atlas did (when you had NPC crew), with the forward/back/power key controlling how open and closed the sails were without having to run to each mast in question. It also allows for some more interesting sail placements with sails at angles or even underneath your ship.

The entirely manual control makes sense in a multiplayer PvP environment, less so in a PvE 1-6 player environment
