Better question: why do you care? Are you a Phasmo developer? Do you plan to file a lawsuit for copyright/trademark infringement? Does everyone else's enjoyment of the game somehow affect your life to the point that you feel validated enough to rage about it?

It's allowed because of creative differences. Demonologist is a Phasmo clone. It is similar in some aspects but in others it is vastly different. For example, while some of the Ghost names are similar they behave differently. The exorcism mechanic is also unique as Phasmo doens't heave it but some other games in the genre do. Also, the ghost names aren't copyrighted as they are real names based on mythology and lore. If game clones weren't allowed then we wouldn't have World of Warcraft clones, music, movies, or creativity. You can take an idea and change it around to make it unique and your own.

Ok thanks for the answer! Still scared to make a game a bout submarines and ocean exploration cause someone might just give me a nice lawsuit! Infact so scared of that, thats is why im not ever releasing my games about ocean exploration! Not that they are any good and still early early stages of dev.

There is no lawsuit to be had, this game doesn't use any Phasmo assets, and you cannot copyright a game genre since it would trigger anti-competitive laws.

So, copyright doesn't protect mechanics. I fully agree that this is just clearly stealing intellectual property, it cannot be a legal issue because a game can't own things like; Requiring 3 pieces of evidence, ghost hunts, 4 person parties, tools to find evidence and all combinations of that.

Now, if Phasmophobia created unique tools and evidence, names, lore and things like that, that no one else had come up with and copyrighted it, they could copyright and sue this company. However.. none of the ghosts names, lore, types of evidence originated from Phasmophobia, and cannot be claimed as intellectual property.

This is still just Phasmophobia 2.0 though, and it wont get as much hype as Phasmo did went it came out, because that hype is over. The people playing this game are just Phasmo veterans that want a breath of fresh air.
