Let us take for example the Abandoned House. If you get Activity in and directly around the Library (the room with the big portrait that says Magna), then that is the Ghost Room for this round. That means most activity will happen there, most evidence will be found there, and if it starts hunting, the ghost will start its hunt from that room (there are a very few exceptions to this rule, but that depends on the ghost).
The ghost room is always randomized every round. The easiest way to find a ghost room is via an Ouija Board if there is one, as you can directly ask where the ghost is and it will tell you (assuming the Board does not immediately break and trigger a hunt, which can happen). The second best way IMO is to use a thermometer, as the ghost room will always be around 5-10°C (or lower if your ghost has Freezing as evidence). Do note that some maps have rooms that are inherently colder that other rooms (like the Basement in the Abandoned House) and that temperature drop is a steady process that can take a few minutes.
TL;DR: Look for the room with the most activity. That is generally the ghost room.
Activity is things like bottles being thrown, the ghost actively talking to you, cabinets and drawers being opened and closed repeatedly, or doors and lightswitches being interacted with.
The best thing you can do is to simply listen for stuff to happen and go to the source of the sounds and poke around there.
Canvas is the hardest evidence to get most of the time (followed by esg and fingerprints). You can increase the chance with fulus. Some people say it works better if you move the canvas multiple times in the room, but I can't confirm that yet.
In many cases you can mark canvas after you waited for the last evidence for a couple of minutes and nothing happened.
