Really? That ballet Satan guy said there would darkness and I need to protect myself plus I've seen those teaser videos with monsters breaking buildings. What they changed that?
Honestly, build where ever you want. You can craft your own portal pretty quickly, and when you reach that point where you can craft your portal, then you have already ''outgrown'' your ''local'' trader. As in, the stuff he sell you have already bought all or simply dont need.
As at that point you will always search out traders in differant realms
So find a spot you like, that's all you should consider really in my opinion
But the transmutation tower is a tool that needs to be used...alot.
In terms of the souroundings i suggest close to stone, as you dont want to build a wood shack :)
or maybe you want!
But you can make your own transmutation tower too, just like making your own portals. First step I do when making a new portal is step through and install my transmutation tower (and give it a card I like such as Treasury). That way I dont have to do the Fae towers so early. Last step when closing a portal down... picking that back up again.
You can build your own portals but they will never link to other built portals.
