Well i honestly don´t care why, but if there is no dedicated servers i am out. I am not looking forward beeing at the mercy of the devs to beeing able to play a game.
You do realize that some people are used to running multiple connected Servers since ARK, and Atlas needed an additional Database for the seamless transfer between servers, and people still managed to run that @home. So have a little faith ;-)
So yeah i would also say dedicated server are somehow paramount.
No Man's Sky? Path of Exile? Perfectly fine example (and more accurate examples) of a could-based architecture and phased instancing. I've yet to see anyone asking for private NMS or PoE servers, and those games are plenty successful.
these games take much less than alot of ppl seem to think to run. quick search for what do i need to run X popular survival game server. u will see a toaster could run most.
Nope, not your standard p2p survival game. It's cloud-based phased instancing like you see in No Man's Sky. The only difference is NMS allows you to play while not connected to the "greater mega cloud", then syncs your single player stuff up when you do connect (so no downtime). I do wish Nightingale could get to that point "offline play" though.
Far as playing co-op, think of this architecture to work like No Man's Sky and Path of Exile (or even WoW with their phased instancing) and NOT the dedicated server route with X number of players per server limits. You have 100% control over who you see, who you play with, if you play with anyone, who can see/visit your realm, who can build in your realm. You do it through realm cards/settings, just like in NMS where you can choose to never see anyone but friends.
It's not an "excuse". It's a fundamental difference in architecture. Go read PCGames article with Hello Games on how NMS leverages cloud tech to accomplish what they do (how expeditions are created, daily missions, etc), how it's delivered, etc. This wouldn't be possible with physical servers. Everything I've read about how Nightingale works (how it was built) tells me they are doing the same thing.
Comparing the physical server architecture of Ark, Palworld, Conan, etc doesn't even make sense. There are a lot of benefits to cloud tech that I don't think a lot of people understand. Seamless delivery of events, features, content, etc without the need of downtime and updating dedicated server files is a wonderful.
If Nightingale can figure out a way to deliver their cloud tech Realm system AND dedicated servers, that's great. But if it's a choice between dedicated servers and what's possible with cloud tech, I'm choosing cloud tech capabilities every single time.
Okay, got confirmation.
6 players concurrent per Realm, but more people can set a Realm as their Respite.
So what could this look like?
Let's say we have a group of 10, and we all put our Respite Realm as the same one. 6 players jump online, no problem. Player 7 tries to join, they'll be unable get back into the Realm as long as 6 players are in there. If a player logs out or goes to another Realm, Player 7 can now travel to that Realm/login.
Alternative:
We have a group of 10, and we've split into two Respite Realms.
Player 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 all have a Desert Abeyance Respite Realm.
Player 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 all share a Forest Abeyance Realm.
If players 1, 6, and 7 create a party, Player 1 could invite them to their Respite as long as all the other players aren't currently in the Respite Realm.
We also have a card update coming up which will add another option
Updated Feb 18th
How many people can co-op together?
6 players max at a single time in a single realm.
Can I host a dedicated server?
Inflexion provides private dedicated servers via Google. There are no 3rd party hosting options at Early Access.
Can other players join my server(realm)?
By default, all realms are invite-only (private). New realms may be created as Public.
Can my character move around to other games(realms)?
Yes, characters may move freely between any realm they are invited to and any portal they walk through.
Can my friends access my game when I'm offline?
Yes, players may share a Respite realm by placing an Estate Cairn in the same realm.
This will allow them all to start that realm independently and stay in-game even if the first player logs off.
There is also a realm card for allowing access without setting your respite as their respite.
What can other players access/do when they join my realm?
Build. Destroy. Craft. Everything and anything. All players have access to everything in the realm they are in.
Can I revoke an invite/kick someone?
Players can only be kicked from the party, not the realm. This is a high trust system.
Is progression server or character based?
Progression is character based. Realm puzzles can be regenerated by making a new realm.
Can I have more than one Respite Point?
No, but you can have multiple characters so you could try:
You and your friends each build an Estate Cairn in 1 Realm and play asynchronously whenever you please or
You have multiple characters. You have 1 character which you play with friends with a shared Respite, and another which has a private Respite Realm.
Wait, how does all this work though?
Invite your friends to a party
They travel to your Realm via the party system
Whether or not they set your Realm to their Respite Point, if you log out they can keep playing in the Realm
They build an Estate Carin in your Respite realm.
Friends can now travel to your Realm even if you're offline, as long as their Estate Carin is set to your Realm

and about 800 other games. Why are you people acting like you've never seen a server based game before. They've been around for at least 20 years. Stop acting like this is different. It isnt.
Think it threw me that there were complaints around not having dedicated servers, had me thinking it was going to be like ARK, Conan Exiles etc.
It isn´t an MMO though. Because there is no massive amount of players at once in the same instance.
It´s hard to understand why a dev would choose a system that doesn´t allow dedicated serves in this genre.
And the realms aren´t the reason, different biomes and such is something other games have as well and the way a game uses to get you ghere doesn´t matter.
