I don't understand why there are realms
Why have different realms to go to and not just one huge world? How do you go back the the previous realm? What if I go to a new one, then the next one and built a base, then go to another then another, how to go back to the one with a base?

You set one as your home base, called Respite realm. From there, you go and farm in other realms via portals. You can set another realm as respite if you like the world( Desert fanboy instead of Swamp fanboy), old respite will be gone though...

Opened portal to another realm continue to exist(using same cards to re-open again) even when it closes until you open a new one(different cards) .

The card system where you can specifically apply certain modifiers to a given realm would be somewhat awkward if you had just one big realm.

If there would be no realms it would be too obvious that its just another "grind-next-important-resource-to-progress" live service survival game?
This way it has a slight bit of different flavor while being another same-same?

There are a number of reasons for from a technology and from a game play standpoint.

First from a technological standpoint it allows smaller play areas that take up less resources at any given moment. This allows multiple single player shards on servers that are there at all times so you can play with others when you decide that is what you want and not when you don't want to.

For example If I want to hunt an Apex creature I can open a realm and (eventually) make it public. People will (eventually) be able to find that realm and jump to it. This will let multiple player jump into that Realm to fight an Apex creature. However you haven't given them access to your respite realm, your base, or anything else. once you have hunted what you are looking for you can close the portal and no one can go to your other realms unless you want them to.

That gives you as a player extreme control over when and how long you play with others.

Theme wise these are extra-dimensional realms and we are stuck in a labyrinth of sorts trying to get home.

As far as getting home.. a portal is open and you can travel through it, you can have portals for multiple realms open at your Estate that lets you farm resources and material.

This also replaces a fast travel system as basically the portals become your fast travel as the realms are small enough to explored on foot.

We are from 1890's in Europe stuck , because the portal system failed. What is still to be seen is how many of the modern inventions of earth are in the game.

Didn't think that needed to be said... however 1890s yes Europe no. The game lets you feel like you are from just about anywhere, just in the 1890s

Can I have multiple swamp cards that lead to different places? Each realm is procedural correct?
Is structural integrity a thing?

So many questions.

Lierally because the entire narrative conceit of this game is that this is how the universe of Nightingale works. You might as well as why Skyrim is one huge continent and *not* a collection of different realms connected by magical crossroads.

Without saying much and advertise for another upcoming game, if you like one huge world with many biomes, there is an upcoming game for that. It ends with Fire! Of course there are others. The one that is based on that body-builder-turned-governor-that-acted-the-character also comes to mind though it is small map.

As for Nightingale, it is part of the lore. From an Aesthetic point of view, it also offer variety to players to decide how their home realms will look, as well as from a performance point of view.

I like the variation of the realms. There are other games that have one huge map with different areas and weather, but even those can be very boring because they are static. Realms do give you the chance to change lots of things in a controlled way

Because the game designers wanted it this way? That is like asking why does Skyrim have dragons - because the creator(s) wanted it so. A game can be made a million different ways, hence why we have a variety of games on the market.
