Tencent always and I mean ALWAYS slowly escalates monetization in games so people who started with the game are hooked and are too deep into it to just leave. They're doing it with Riot (valorant skins + league recent $200 chroma and 'ultimate skins' as well as countless changes to prestige skins + literal skin gacha for tft + + + +), Poe and their skin monetization getting more and more out of hand, even indie games on steam acquired by Tencent are starting to go for dlcs the likes only Paradox Interactive could compete with, Conan with battlepasses (a game that could be most comparable to this game) and on and on and on.

I don't even want to start with all the games that introduce gacha mechanics owned by tencent. The only times they slow down is when a giant company with already established users (like Riot) is acquired, but even there you'll see more and more monetization. Riot has been in their greasy hands for so long that their monetization is beyond anything I'd consider getting into. I've seen it get worse every step of the way. It's never enough for them.

You naming Fromsoftware is also misleading as both Sony and Tencent have around 30% share in that company. All the examples I stated are above 50% for Tencent giving them actual say in the matter. They call it a majority stake for a reason yk. Same goes for Epic. Tencent does not have a majority stake in it.

People stupid/wealthy enough to throw money at a game for cosmetics deserve to be scammed. Who cares who owns it as long as nothing they sell affects gameplay it doesn’t matter. I won’t pay $20 for a hat so it does nothing to me only the idiots who pay for it
Fr, id much rather play a game that gets its revenue from whales through expensive cosmetics.. As long as the game doesnt sell ♥♥♥♥ that affects gameplay and advantages against others, why does it matter.. Sell skins for $1000 idc ahahaha

Hey folks. We’ve seen this question/topic come up a couple of times. The short answer is that we were not acquired by Tencent - they are a major investor in our studio.

We’re a game studio based in Edmonton, Canada, and we retain full creative control over both our studio and Nightingale as a game. We have absolutely no plans to aggressively monetize our game or lock portions of Nightingale behind paywalls. Quite the contrary - we’re very excited about what we’ll be sharing with you in February as part of our Early Access launch.

You best tell that to tencent in china as they said

"IT House reported on February 23 that Tencent announced that it would acquire Canadian-based game studio Inflexion Games in a wholly-owned manner. Officials said that the CEO of Inflexion Games will remain in office after Tencent's acquisition."

https://www.ithome.com/0/604/486.htm

Dead matter said they never had penny off tencent.
But looking up the companies in Canada. It tells a different story.

Hope they game is coming along ok.

The language around the acquisition wasn't as clear as it could have been (and that's probably on us) but as you can see from the {連結已移除} article below (that broke the story at the time) Tencent acquired a majority stake from Improbable. A lot of the subsequent reporting misinterpreted the headline and article.

As a major investor they surely have some significant power in company decisions if they want them though, no? What stops them from doing whatever they want? Do we just have to hope Tencent of all companies is being nice enough with this one unlike with every other game I've already played in which they're a major investor/shareholder?

As a quote in the article I linked above says, Inflexion has full operational control. I know this is all just words and the proof will ultimately be in the game itself, so come February we hope you'll take the chance to see for yourself.

I'd really like to believe that but there have been way too many times in which a game's monetization just went the way of Tencent for me to take a word for it. I'll keep track of the game and decide once it's out as EA or been out for some time since (aside from the worry of monetization) it looks very promising. I hope you understand. And thanks for answering.

They own the company.

Lets hope they don't close down the game(because they can) like tencent have in many games on steam.
Because it wasn't making enough money.

But looking forward to the game.

Poe you have to use real money so sh.. game. I have play that game almost 5000 hour. But not anymore.

You do not have to use real money. You have no idea what you're talking about. The entire game is open to you. There is a cash shop ,yes. But it doesn't sell player power. It's all cosmetics, and quality of life things, like extra stash tabs.

With that being said... You can't sit there and call a game "s..t", after you've put 5k hours into it. That's ridiculous. If you spent that much time in the game that means the game was, obviously, excellent, and you were having a blast.

Almost 5000 hour play time poe, i can write, you need to use real money. you need extra stash tabs to play this game like you want.

If you can avoid the same pitfalls that Snail-Wildcard has with their game Ascended (play issues, server exclusivity limitations, failure to deliver on promises/assurances etc,) then you're going to be in a prime spot to succeed.

That said, Im almost always a wait and see type person(hence why I didnt get Ark Ascended ). Launch well and you'll be leagues ahead of the competition.

I would only be concerned if it installs tencent spyware

Appreciate all the additional comments. Since I've answered the main concern, I'm going to lock the thread.
