Does anyone know if you can buy coal at an essence Trader?
I need a ton of it and don't really want to farm if I don't have to. Would love to know if anyone has ever seen a trader sell it. Not GUNPOWDER or sulfur. I'm only looking for coal.

You can see what every essence trader sells through your guidebook. It's worth a look.

You can, but it's kind of expensive. It costs T1 essence, not essence dust, iirc.

It's probably sold by multiple traders, but I'm fairly certain the first time I saw it was in one of the Provisioner realms. Not sure if it's sold in all of them. Check them in your guidebook to verify before making the trek.

I'm coming back to say, I may have been entirely mistaken. I looked through the traders guidebook and couldn't find the coal anywhere.

I swear on my mother's grave that I thought I had seen it, I even remember thinking "Dam, that would be convenient if it cost essence dust instead of T1 essence". But I can't find it in the traders list at all now. So maybe I'm remembering seeing sulphur or something? I dunno.

I've seen both sulfur and coal at essence traders. Might not be at the ones listed in the guidebook though. It only lists the main ones that show on a map when you first arrive and not the lesser ones. Could have been at one of those.

Oh, that's a good point, that could very well be what it was.
I need to start taking notes at the essence traders if those lesser traders aren't in the guidebook at all.

You can get coal in those mini dungeon "vault" portal things by breaking the wooden barrels with an axe. They have a chance to drop coal, and is by far the most reliable way to get it.

There's at least one in every map. You can tell where it is on the map, it'll be a fey portal right ontop of an enemy encounter. Go there, fight your way underground, activate the portal, go in and in there break all the wooden barrel things along the way.

Not sure now though like some others. I still see both sulfur and gunpowder at multiple essence traders but I'm not finding coal. Thought it was at a desert trader I had seen it before. Earlier on I'm sure I bought both to make a little gunpowder. Now I just kill bound for it.

Why coal?
I know it burns longer but is there some secret super useful recipe that needs it?
Lumber burns for a fair time and you can just go knock down a couple of buildings in passing out in a realm and come home with a metric tonne of it without even trying.
Maybe give that a shot and see if it's really worth investing all the time in searching for it or essence in buying it. The time advantage you gain specifically using coal might be a lot less than the time you are investing in getting it. Or not... I don't know. Just a thought.

steel. you need it to make steel
Pinkeh Mar 17, 2024 @ 4:04am
yeah iron ore combined with coking coal makes steel ingots. you'll want steel alloys when you craft your dauntless melee weapons.

A lot of the T3 recipes call for an alloy to be used. Copper and Iron are both easy to farm tons of. Zinc and Tin? Well, essence traders do sell Tin for dust so that is easier than coal for steel. I guess I just like using steel and saving the tin for making bullets. Or maybe its the fact that I have 8 stacks of iron ore just sitting around...

You can but it's very expensive imo. Coal and sulfur have been the hardest resources to find for myself and my small group.
We played for about 6 hours yesterday and came away with about 40 each lol. Granted not in a desert the entire time but still.
Makes making steel difficult lol.
Although I've been playing since launch and still never seen a potato lol.
