Magick as direct damage falls off of weapons because of the spells being t1 or t2 for damage. It complements everything though.
You can build the kind of character you like.
Wait, so pure spell focused will get bad then?
It depends on how to support the build. Direct damage spells like Imolation will yield less fun results than say, Shockwave on the throwable Sickle.
High magic will make the fire bullets better but high ranged damage will also make them better.
If you want to stand off and rain fire on your opponents you will likely like bows more than fireballs or Fish Attacks.
Don't forget this isn't like an rpg or mmo where, i have the fireball spell now i'm a mage, Or, i have a bow, now i'm a archer!
You need to spec your entire build around what you're trying to do.
I think anything can be viable... but you have to work toward it.
Whatever is fun. I like knives so I go high melee high crit, with stamina, magick and HP as side stats. I get HP from food. Then stack spells, mostly disenchant, make a mean umbrella and suit and just gloriously stab my way through the world.
Others want more spell focused, or guns, or bows, or axes or mixed....
You build what you want
For the most part, if you want a powerful weapon you just choose what you want and make it using the right materials to boost it's strongest stats. I used ranged damage and crit damage materials for the bolt action because those were it's best stats. For a Porter Pistol or any shotgun, I'd use the metal Einaidia and Sepelwood, because ranged damage is the best stat on them but their critical damage stat is lacking.
Want a high damage, slow attacking melee? Go for a maul using high melee damage materials. Want a Sickle that you primarily use magic enchantments on? Go for magick materials. This is why I like Nightingale's crafting, it lets me use what I want how I want, so long as I choose the right materials for what I want to achieve.
I need Lightning Bolt.
Try the bees, I haven't since the wipe but pre wipe they could hit a weakpoint.
