What to take when first going to a new Realm
When I travel to a new realm I carry supplies to build a bed, tent, campfire, storage chest, Pepys Box, and a Lodestar. Is this overkill? What do you all take with you?

Everything you need is available in the new realm if you need it. I've brought that one rare component to make a pepys box a couple of times. I forget what it's called..... The only component that isn't readily available.

Other than that, just what I have on my back and toolbar. I stopped sleeping, not sure it's totally necessary if you bring good food. If I feel I need it, there are beds around. Just plop down a camp fire and throw a pepys box in a central area.

That's sort of what I settled into. Might change in the future.

In Sylvan's Cradle, one of the town's actually has a Pepy's Box, forgot which one, though I'm not sure if with the new revamp these "Crossway" realms are static or not. (My friend's initial abeyance realm was exactly the same.)

I'm about to start a new randomized realm for the first time, so I'm wondering if every realm generates one.

Food and ammo. I'll either pick up everything I need, or transition back to my estate to fullfill anything else.

I totes agree with my friend Necko <3 I usually only bring good food, ammo, and a synchronous lotus.

Directly I carry 20 of three food types, healing potions and salves, lightning pistol ammo, cold rifle ammo, and bow/arrows. I also carry mats for a bit more (spare parts) than one Loadstar and one Pepys box. I ALWAYS carry a few Synchronous Lotuses.

The Loadstar is used to mark my progress when I want to return to base and pick up where I left off exploring.

I keep a variety of items in the Pepys - bricks and such for simple desert buildings, mats for further Loadstars and a transmuter, spare food, ammo and more potions (companions are guzzlers), a few materials to make "build for the survivor" tasks more convenient, and so on. The loadout varies by the purpose of the outing, and usually I keep a quarter of its slots free in case my companion's pack gets filled (Pack Rat Syndrome).

It's the RV approach more than living off the land like Necko does; what's "right" is down to your style of play.

True; although I only ever seem to loot engraved ingots/carved stone/wire when I don't need them and crafting from scratch can take ages in the wild, so I tend to carry enough for a lodestar and a pepys box so I can drop them down if suddenly I need to end a session.

Sleeping is still useful if you don't feel like the faff of random Bound swarms while trying to get somewhere; however, I agree it feels very optional now.

I slightly miss the days when sleep was a separate meter; making a hasty camp on the edge of unexplored territory as night fell so I'd be fresh for the morning, exploring on through Bound-infested forests fuelled by pots of coffee, or losing half the daylight to exhaustion.

I carry the same things as OP. Overkill? Sure, but I like it. it also lets me set up quickly without having to scrounge up the mats.
