Observations about the Followers
So I recruited one of the followers. Fun idea. Needs a bit of work.

By default, I guess, they come with an axe. THEY CHOP DOWN TREES LIKE IT'S A SALE AT WALMART!

If I give them a pick, they ignore any and all ores we come to.

If I give them a sickle, they turn their nose up at any plant we walk by.

Give them an axe again...and they will denude a forest in mere moments.

So...perhaps a tweak one way or another.

Not only that, they don't pick up resources for ♥♥♥♥, they manage to find the very best wood they shouldn't even be able to get to and the quick run over and put it in one of the fires. There needs to be an off button so they can gather, we should be able to see what they have in their inv - which unless you give it to them, rarely does anything show and then there needs to be limits as to what they can "help" tend fires with. Love um hate um.

They are relatively useless other than being a pack mule and helping with fights by giving the enemy a second target. They require a lot of work. Would be so cool if there was a radial menu and you could give them orders like in ARK be like harvest wood, stone, ore, fiber etc. Or tell them to just defend you, stand guard. There are so many things they could do.

Time will tell.

I also observed that followers are the most efficient lumberjacks.
But I gave mine a pickaxe and she (Leila) diligently mines and collects stones and ore that are generally not so important as decorative elements, so that is fine for me. Also in a more relaxed way than this speedcutting of trees ;)
So my follower is not ignoring anything here. I can understand that this is frustrating.
She also carries a lot of stuff (unlimited carry weight I guess). I just have to take the more precious loot back before we get home to the crafting stations where she may use it without my consent. But she stores all stone and ores in her little basket (with the little survivors box checked) in an exemplary manner. She is also a big fighter and has even revived me some times - and vice versa. Playing solo that is a crucial bonus. And she would not trap me anywhere because she has no collsion with the player model. That's really positive.

Although the communication is very basic, the cooperation is surprisingly nice - after I made her a stone mason. So I am glad to have my Leila around :)

Of course more options to communicate would be nice, it is EA, so I have high hopes!

My hireling started with a mining pick and definitely liked to mine stone. I swapped it out for a maul and now they wallop enemies for me instead and leave the harvesting alone.

When you give them a different tool, be sure to equip it for them or they won't use it.

A bit of work? I hope you are joking. There is literally ZERO interaction with your companions. We need at least basic controls - stop, move here, attack/harvest target. Then we need attack/harvest radius, turn on/off harvesting, passive/defense/aggressive modes etc.
Play Conan Exiles, mate, you will see what is interaction with your companions mean.

So only 6 things recruits are good for 1. chopping wood, 2. mule pack, 3. mining ore/rocks, 4. fighting, 5. help with building, & rezzing you. However, they won't harvest plants with a sickle can we get this added/fixed? It would be cool if you could assign them to do tasks too.

I like how mine mostly just stands on top of me when I'm trying to mine or whatever. I accidentally hit them instead of the node, and they just stand there in the way, staring at me.

Today I've determined that my Recruit has the personality of a 5yr. old, or a cat that's craving attention like a 5yr. old when they are bored.

I was setting up my new farm in a Forest Herb realm and while placing the plant boxes she could not stop running back and forth in front of me and everywhere I tried to place them. I swear if she could talk she'd be giggling like a child and yelling "Look at me Look at me!!!" over and over again.

So these followers are still trash?? I played the game with a friend for about 4 or 5 days then we stopped because the game was just so.. like.. halfway done.. was hoping for more updates..

If you stay long enough around an area and it has a pick equipped, it will start mining actual nodes and pick up the results, if you get CTD from chopping wood, stay around the trees you want cut, equip axe on follower, it will chop the tree and you will not crash. but yeah, takes a lot of time, certainly a lot more then you doing it all yourself. And like mentioned here before, equip it a maul and it will send npc's flying (literally). The pathing of all creatures, follower or npc is pretty horrible so far.

My best success has been getting a recruit that actually started with a pickaxe.
I have an abundance of Dennis. I recruited Dennis in my Respite realm, then fired him in the next. When I returned to my Respite there were two Dennis. I re-recruited one of the Dennis and went on my way. When I upgraded from Harpy gear and gave it to my current Dennis, another Dennis appeared in my base. The 1st extra Dennis has the pickaxe he started with while the 2nd extra Dennis has the sickle with which I had equipped my recruited Dennis. So I has a Dennis who is my follower, and Dennis who wander the rooms of my base, and a Dennis who wanders the forest and fields around my base.
