Enchantments, however, need activation. They can only be put on tools and (some) other handheld items. THey are by default activated with R; you then either 'cast' it, or imbue it in the tool and it's activated when you use it as described.
Some spells are last for a few times, some for a few hits. They cost stamina and durability on use, but you can use them infinited times.
Everything else is a permanent augment to your tool, like infuse (1 for green, 2 for blue, 3 for violett. Only one per kind (like stamina recovery) and limited by the colour, green inuse only on green gear, on blue gear you can have green and blue...).
Edit:
Charms only one per item, the trigger effect last for a few seconds. (sry, didn´t play in english, in german it called talisman).
Thanks Subway. figured it out from your post. On PS4 controller it is R1 to charge and R2 to cast.
