How do Charms work, do they last 2 minutes or are they permanent? And how many can we have?

Permanent buff. 1 on every piece of gear basically. Both clothing and weapons.

I have recovery on my climbing picks. Can someone please tell me how to activate it? And bonus points if you can tell me the controller button :+)

Charms are permanent, they need no activation. Same with infusions.

Enchantments, however, need activation. They can only be put on tools and (some) other handheld items. THey are by default activated with R; you then either 'cast' it, or imbue it in the tool and it's activated when you use it as described.

Load it in your hand with R and than left mouse click to cast it. Some cast has charge, like the flame cast, than hold the mouse button

i know, i answered to soma, recovery on a tool is a spell on use. And you can have for every rarity upgrade one. So green tools can have 1, blue can have 2 and violett can have 3 spells. You can change them with holding R, use with click R to take the spell in your hand, and than use it with left click to cast it on you or your tool, or hold mouse button to charge it up.
Some spells are last for a few times, some for a few hits. They cost stamina and durability on use, but you can use them infinited times.

Everything else is a permanent augment to your tool, like infuse (1 for green, 2 for blue, 3 for violett. Only one per kind (like stamina recovery) and limited by the colour, green inuse only on green gear, on blue gear you can have green and blue...).

Edit:
Charms only one per item, the trigger effect last for a few seconds. (sry, didn´t play in english, in german it called talisman).

Talismans only one per item.

Thanks Subway. figured it out from your post. On PS4 controller it is R1 to charge and R2 to cast.
