My friends were really hyped for this game when the initial trailer came out but I wasn't convinced and I'm still not hah.
The hunting knife is a dagger with high crit.
The scythe is a short sword with quick slashing damage.
The axe is a balanced axe between speed and damage.
The pickaxe is a twohanded mace that does huge stun damage.
The maul is basically a pickaxe ...
You can also fight unhanded.
Theres different reach, speed and effects between the different ones. You also have magic that you can add to the different tools.
Try the hammer on the bound, it is an AOE knock down, and does decent damage on them, I generally just juggle a bunch of them, and let my follower pick axe them to death.
The knife actually is pretty decent, you give up block for a dodge, and it crits a lot, but spending the game stabbing things literally in the A-Hole is not really the game experience out of combat most want.
Climbing picks can be used to climb, but they also feel like dual wielding short swords when fighting.
The wood axe can chop trees, but it's also an axe which is a traditional weapon.
The sickle is for sticks and plant fiber, but it can be used as a 1h sword with an offhand item for combat.
The maul is 2h and the only weapon/tool that can't be used outside of combat.
So if you're definition of weapon is can't be used for anything but combat, there's one item. If you're definition is good a combat, all of the tools are also weapons.
And the climbing Picks are also good dual wielding weapons.
besides i didnt say an axe isnt a weapon. nothing wrong with my perception. just your attitude
You should wait before buying it, like a few months.
And yes the tools are your melee weapons and there are classical melee weapons (club, mace, knives...), and some ranged weapons also have a melee damage stats (the crossbow make 9 melee dmg) but currently you cannot do a melee attack with them.
For me the weapon of choice now is the pickaxe, do decent damage, the overhead strike is good to hit opponents in the head.
But I actually hope, we'll see some "real" pure melee weapons in future updates.
hae to admit on the backstabbing part, this game and its combat system is not made for stealth play, it simply makes no sense when you one shot everything anyways
There are all kinds of ways to craft one of the "tools" into a seriously nasty weapon.
An item inherits traits from the materials you use to craft it. So you can pick stuff that has high melee damage, strength, blocking efficiency, and other traits depending on your playstyle.
The crafting stations can have decorative items called augments placed near them that give actual crafting bonuses. Putting a "crude grindstone" near a workbench gives a permanent buff to the melee damage of all axes or knives crafted there.
You can play minor realm cards that give a permanent buff to anything crafted while the card is in effect. Combatant's workshop gives melee ++, Forge gives melee +, crit damage +, bulwarks gives blocking efficiency, artisan gives durability ++
Once you've built the weapon, you can upgrade it to add slots for permanent magic buffs. 1 slot for green, 2 for blue, 3 for epic. The buffs can add all kinds of things. Extra melee damage, crit damage, stamina efficiency, blocking efficiency, etc.
You can put an enchantment on weapons. My favorite right now is hermetic seal. You summon a ball of fire with your left hand and then slam it into your weapon causing the weapon to burst into flames. Now the weapon will do a small AOE fire blast and set enemies on fire with each hit. The effect only lasts for so many hits, but you can charge it up for a few seconds to have more hits. I can add 6 charges currently. It takes about 2-3 seconds to charge it to max.
And then there are charms. Which add even more effects. One of my favorites makes weapons do more damage immediately after using an enchantment... like hermetic seal.
You can stack ALL OF THESE UP. So even a humble wood axe can be made into a seriously nasty weapon.
