Yes. They just randomly walking around, carrying your stuff, attacking enemies and harvesting resources depending on tool you gave them and equipped. All you can do is check their storage and dismiss :D
You can give them different tools to use but must Lt click on the item to highlight, then Rt click for options > equip. If you just Rt click on it you can end up pulling it back into your inventory. When you can, give them a hammer for boss fights. They make pretty good tanks.
They have unlimited carry wt but their # of slots is small. I gave mine a nice new backpack and it changed nothing but their gear score level. Sad times. You can give them your old clothes or if generous make them their own. That's all I know or remember for now.
They are not bad but like a 4 yr old, totally uncontrollable, and worth a chuckle once in a while. If using for wood cutting don't place your base in the trees. They will fell the trees on your house and smash it to bits. LOL
What I noticed: When the NPC picks up wood, he takes it to the furnace.
Not to a (shared) storage!
I have never had him add a single pc of wood to a fire and he cuts down a lot of trees when I let him, but he will add mats to buildings and stuff. I carefully extinguish fire after cooking and when I next log on there is no wood waiting, it's disappeared. I'm going to watch him like a hawk and see if it's just me not paying attention or if he is bugged.
They have unlimited carry weight.
They can _revive_ you in a fight.
They fight rather well, if you give them decent weapons for the level of the realm.
They distract bosses, though they have a tendency to go down as injured because they get nuked by AOE's. But you can run past them and just press E once to revive them too.
Overall the recruits seem to work great.
If you want autocollectors, I think that's what they brass robots might be for later. Every time I see them, there's a strange post like structure called an "automaton station". It's usually empty, sometimes I will see a stack of wood or resources in it. I wonder if we the players will be able to build these things later on, and set them to auto-harvest around our bases.
If you do not want a Follower to use wood from your storage, you can open the storage that you have the wood in... look at the bottom right and you'll see a permission that allows your Survivor access. click that and disallow. This *should* stop them from being able to take items out of that storage (or put items in, if they ever did that).
Not the cooking area, the furnace.
