you first pickaxe has like ~5 itemscore so you can only pick 0 nodes
the next one is a 20 so you can pick 10 nodes
and once you upgrade that one into a green item it fits 40 itemscore to pick 40 nodes.
( starting with your first map after the home base (score 20 world) you will find green orbs, 40 of these to upgrade any item into green aka 40 score )

I just crafted my T3 benches (Excellence) that required iron ingots. I found them in the Swamp Provisioner along the beach side of the maps. If you go into options, there is a Codex tab, you can search any item in the game and it will tell you where to find it.
