What made you think that always online single player was a good idea? I am genuinely curious
What exactly does always online single player add? It's not like dark souls where you can see echoes of other players, it's not like there's a drop in/drop out system, it's not like sea of thieves where you can just encounter other players, there is literally no purpose for it and all it does is make the game worse. It's harder to code, harder to maintain, and adds 0 value. I refuse to support this feature, I should have the option to play a single player survival craft game offline if I want to, and I encourage others to not purchase this game until an offline mode is added.

Edit: Some people seem to be under the false impression I just hate this game, my whole argument here is that online only games give you no assurance that the product you paid for will be with you long term, rather that when they run out of money from sales and have to shut the servers off you don't have a game to play anymore. I want this game to succeed, I want to be able to play it beyond it's standard lifecycle, I like this game, if it isn't permanently online the gameplay will be just as good if not better because of modding and private hosting, and it will be longer lasting, this is this game's path to success.

"Hey @everyone

We’ve seen a lot of discussion in recent days around our decision to make Nightingale online-only at our Early Access release. We understand that this can be frustrating for a number of reasons.

Our vision for the game since inception was to create an interconnected series of Realms, with the idea of allowing for co-operative exploration in mind - a universe bigger than a single Realm or server. That meant we made a choice early in development between supporting co-op from day one or focusing development on an offline mode.

Co-operative gameplay associated with having party members across multiple Realms was the more technically challenging problem and therefore the one we chose to tackle first. Looking back on that decision, we misjudged what some of you were looking for in your experience.

We are now prioritizing and developing an offline mode that we plan to release as soon as feasible. Keep an eye on our social channels and Discord for updates in the coming weeks alongside other things we're working on. Thank you to everyone who has stepped into the Realms with us so far - the journey has just begun and we look forward to sharing it with you all.

- The Inflexion Team"

If you set your game to public you CAN encounter other players...

Other people can visit your realm while you're offline.

There really is no single player mode. This is a multiplayer online game. So that means 0 - 6 players can play in one realm. What you are calling single player is you just playing with 1 player (you) in a multiplayer game that uses a server. You can't play the game without the server. At some point they might include the server with the game and you would then install that to play offline. At least that is what my understanding is. Maybe the devs will clear this up, but so far when I've said this, no one has shown me this is the wrong explanation.

And you are right. Don't buy the game if you want an offline mode, since of course, it does not have one.

No idea if an actual dev will respond to you. You could try their discord, there is a better chance of finding out why there. I read an article where they said the game was designed as an MMO. So ya, an online game. Most likely it is pretty hard to change a fundamental design decision like that mid development, although some companies have done stuff like that.

Because it has online co-op. If you start a game, play in your single player game for 2 weeks, then invite a buddy for co-op, guess what? The game needs this very rare resource called "Internetium" that it uses to telepathically connect the two game states across the planet, so your buddy can play on the same map that you modified with your actions.

This is why.

It's not a single player game. It's an mmo that allows you to play privately. This was originally fully an mmo that was changed to instance based allowing for private games instead.

It's an mmo, so treat it like an mmo. If you don't like mmos, don't play this one.

you realise that games have the ability to be offline when you're playing by yourself and can then switch to an online mode when you invite someone else right? I tdoesn't have to be purely one or the other... V rising managed this, enshrouded managed this, palworld managed this, valheim managed this, minecraft managed this, conan exiles managed this, ark managed this, but this game is just incapable huh..

"if you set your game to public" so that means there's a non-public state... aka single player... which could be done offline....

none of you have managed to answer the question of what value this way of doing things adds... this isn't an MMO you can set your game to private aka only you are able to access that server, so why does it still require you to be online when you do that when you've made it single player. It adds nothing to the game, it adds no value, it just makes the game worse

Also it means that the devs could just rugpull you because once you've played past your 2 hours, if the devs decide to shut the servers down, you can't play the game anymore AND you can't get your money back. It's bad.

Could be, but then we would have to wait 6 months to a year for them to write the game all over again for that.

This game is really a MMO with a modest number of players allowed, so Modestly Multiplayer Online game :steammocking:

So what they have made is the worst of both worlds, you have to deal with server issues and lag and if the devs decide to pull the plug on the game, you lose everything and can't play it anymore even if you only ever played it singleplayer. This is a rugpull in the making if they don't add an offline mode.

like I said to others... if/when they decide to shut the servers down, even if you only ever played singleplayer you lose your game entirely.. it's a rugpull plain and simple.

that isn't value added by it being permanently online.. you can visit other people's worlds in enshrouded too yet you can still play that offline when you don't want visitors. You realise peer to peer netcode exists right?
