I'm giving up looking for wheat...
I've wandered for hours through the forest biomes, Astrolabe, etc. and I didn't find any gardens or random patches of wheat. It's just not worth it to me to keep trying.

I found mine near one random human settlement.
80 hours in, I haven't found a tomato plant yet. And I only have 4 onions, not enough to make seeds...

I checked all the human settlements. None of them had gardens. Looked at all the plants around the settlements. Most interesting thing I found were mushrooms.

It looks very similar to one of the standard crude plant fiber plants, if you aren't sure what you are looking for. The most common places I find them are near the smallish points of interest that have no puzzles or infestation, where there is a little circular wooden fence with a small opening (like a livestock pen or something).

Taking the peaceful route to obtain the mats for Nelly will lead you to Danu. A lot of plants spawn there which you can harvest and secure for seeds and farming.

However you can go to Danu even without the quest if you have unlocked the Major card. I forgot which it was. But it is in a swamp.

Edit: and you can reset the realm for more plants. Definitely tomato there. But I am not sure if the plants are different or procedural each reset.

Unfortunately, neither of us came across anything like that (pen).

If you're having trouble, try hitting up the discord. Plenty of us there and we can gladly help with this.

I have over 10000 wheat so I could give you some to get you started on your farming journey.

In both the forest and swamp realms it is always a good idea to make a run around most the perimeter of the maps. There you will find a surprising number of small buildings, some corrals and other abandoned fields, many in the first couple realm levels, long before Danu in the gloom.

When you find the spots scythe everything. In this game there will be items hidden under destructible bits like crates, weeds, etc. If you never destroy the crates you will never find the little packets of seeds, same with plants over shrooms. Wheat plants are found in the forest biomes and you will only recognize them when you know what all the usual plants look like. Swamp will have oats. You will also find all the other plants early on but you do have to be in Hoover mode. Also look around every POI in all the biomes.

My first play through I swore there was nothing much anywhere to be found. I never saw a wheat until herbarium realms. Now I know better. Not being in a hurry is helpful. Being frustrated just means you need a break.

Thanks everyone. I actually reset a realm and found a ton of wheat, so everything is good now.

Just a small note to add, if you've been collecting tons of fibers, you'll eventually notice that not all of them stack together. Though they have the same icon, those are different types of fibers, one of which can be wheat. Save the wheat, and use "seed" with your mortar workstation to grind those fibers into seeds.
(At first it seems weird, until you realize you're getting a sheave of wheat stalks, and the grinding is the processing to remove the seeds.)
Hopefully all of this was obvious to everyone, but if somebody hasn't had their coffee yet, this should clarify a little bit.

Another small notes. I've found what looked like messenger bags that had seeds in them, as well as wheat, oat, tomato, coffee, and some other crop I keep forgetting, all around abandoned buildings that aren't part of challenges/puzzles.

I just won't shut up this morning it seems... Don't just throw out all that crude plant fiber you've probably been collecting. Extracting it will give T1 Essence, and using a mortar you can get seeds. Those seeds can be used for many things, including being converted into mass amounts of oil at the mortar or tanning workstations. (If you're doing a lot, split it between multiple stations to lessen the total time.)

Ok, I'm going to shut up now and go play :cybereye:

The other tricky thing this game does is actually hide items under other items. My favorites are the specialty mushrooms that you wont see around buildings in swamps until you have scythed the taller plants down. If you knock down stacks of boxes, under them will be seed packets on tables, paint, occasionally glass, but mostly seed packets. See a bunch of tall weeds around an outdoor spigot? Clustered in with them and colored exactly the same will be the cleverly camo'd wheat and oats. Perimeter runs around sections of realms is worthwhile. See those roads that seem to have nothing along them? No POIs? Go there. Check them out. Pin spawns for lvl 200+ mats to come back for.

You should be able to make seeds with 4 onions.

You're very unlikely to get wheat this way. All those extra fibers are really just different tiers of fiber. The wheat is something completely different. You only get wheat fiber by harvesting wheat. So if you suddenly realize some of your fiber is wheat, that just means you found wheat somewhere and didn't notice at the time.
