Zinc only spawns in swamps with realm level 0-49. Depending on your difficulty setting, the herbarium realm you are opening might be too high a level.
If you are playing on extreme difficulty, you either have to lower it or walk in an abeyance realm.
On extreme, antiquarian already spawns lvl 60 realms. You might run into a similiar issue with a quest that asks you to make a potion from T1 swamp fiber. Even antiquarian only spawns T2 and up at extreme.
Oh wait, i have not tried destroying the chests I've looted. hmm interesting, though i can't imagine its enough to rely on for crafting.

So either keep medium and head to abeyance, antiquarian or astrolabe.
Or keep herbarium and lower the difficulty to easy.
My point was, I don't think there is anything that specifically needs brass, some recipes need alloy For those, you can use Bronze instead, and then you need copper and tin, no need for the zinc at all. That is what I did when I ran out of Zinc.
Ah, I've never made those chests. My base is very functional, but essentially looks like trash
