Trying to find quartz?

I'm probably missing something obvious, but I can't seem to find how to get quartz without purchasing it, or understand how to upgrade my tools for mining what seems to be quartz boulders..

The in game guides are NOT helpful.
Help?

Yeah, and they all require a pick stronger than the basic one. I can't figure out how to upgrade that.

You could have easily said "Simple tools are an upgrade to the ones you originally made, they're found in your workbench".

People don't all play like you, I have spent my time exploring and gathering basic materials.

Haha I feel you, I was a little overwhelmed by systems when I started and missed the difference between makeshift and simple, so I was buying quartz to make glass for ages, wondering when and how I'd be able to harvest these better materials. Felt like such a fool when the missing piece hit me.

When you can, make all the simple benches - 12 iirc. This game's crafting system is complex and bloated. Luckily there are some nice folks that will help but for some of it you just have to go find a video guide. It's not for the faint of heart. You will spend hours trying to figure it out and then the light will shine and all will be well, for a while anyway.
