It is all good. I was thinking the same thing. The good thing (or bad on how you look at it)
You will need 40 no matter what you upgrade.
AND
Once you get the refined upgrade bench to go next tier equipment
You will need to upgrade from common to T1 then to T2 and cannot skip directly to T2 just FYI
So if you are planning to experiment with resources to make different variation of suit (many will do)
you will need plenty of T1, T2, T3 essensce which require individual farming (cannot break down T3 to T2 or T1 for example)
I don't know if that's it, but you need to know the upgrades to do them; in this case, the recipe for the refined upgrade bench unlocks the option.
I can confirm you need the refined upgrade bench schematic and you can get it in a swamp/gloom map. I had the same problem as you because when I initially went to the swamp/gloom map the essence trader was invisible and I couldn't interact with him and didn't realize he had the recipe for it so get that and you can then upgrade I just did it and now items are showing up in my excellent upgrade bench to upgrade them further.
You buy it from a trader.
Which trader?
Go to your guidebook. Far right, 'traders', you can see what the main trader in each area sells. Double click the biome and it'll give you a list. Look through them until you find one that sells a refined workbench recipe. Make portal cards, go there, buy it, profit!
Note that each area often has more than one trader; the main trader and a couple of minor traders. The minor traders has a far smaller selection. If you get to a trader and it's the wrong one, look for another.
