So to begin with. Your home realm can only be an abeyance realm, no other type like that ascended can be a home realm. If you followed that one rule initially, then you should have built on that type.
So if it was a forest realm, simply put an abeyance card (yes you can craft these) and forest biome card in a portal and use it. That should take you back to the original home realm. It will do this as long as you have never done this exact sequence (abeyance and biome card in a portal) and checked the reset check box bottom left when teleporting.
This has confused some people into thinking the realms are not random. They are created randomly the first time you use a card combination. From then on, not random for that card combo unless you enable reset when you create the portal to the realm. Doing that creates a new random realm. So essentially there are an infinite variety of realms possible (but many are not really all that different). Different topography and locations of POIs, and maybe a slightly different mix of POIs. Always a Fae Portal and Trader though. Some card combos always have specific quest locations/NPCs too.
Ahh well, it was fun. Going to wait for the offline patch to jump back in again.
I could quantum leap it, but it has been a good 100+ hours. Really enjoyed my time and should probably do something productive in life :)
Can't grumble, best £23 spent in a good long time.
Yes, I'm sure. You can place a cairn anywhere, but you can only set it to respite if that cairn is placed in an abeyance realm. Other realms you can not do this. Now I've not tried it, but I've seen it in videos and I've heard of people that have tried and failed.
Just try and place a cairn in your current realm. They are not hard to make. Now try and set the option to make it the respite (that option should not work).
So it is not the base that makes it the home realm. It is the cairn, the cairn with the respite option set. You can only have one cairn with the respite option set. I have tested that. When you set a second to respite, the first gets the option cleared. This is how you can move from one abeyance realm to another (or from one respite location to another in the same realm). Of course, you need to keep in mind, you need a portal open between the two when you do this. Once you set the 2nd cairn to be respite, Return to Respite will only take you to the 2nd cairn you just created. You need to use a teleport to get back to the first cairn (and first base).
Here is another thread on this topic:

Could be a bug, but I doubt it. The abeyance realm is special of all the realm types and is needed for you to progress through to end game.
It is the only realm with the tower of power. It has less enemies than other realms. And of course, is the only realm where you can set the cairn as your respite.
So how would you unlock the first 6 major cards, the Antiquarian, Astrolabe, provisioner, herbarium, gloom, and hunt without the tower of power?
If this is a response to the OP, then read carefully and you will see they are no longer in an abeyance realm. So apparently they have no respite set.
Unfortunately this game doesn't stop you from shooting yourself in the foot. A person could waste a large amount of time building a huge base, only to realize they built it in a temporary realm that the game allows you to easily reset and lose all your stuff and your base and have no way to return.
Yes, you can always create an abeyance realm and do the towers from any realm, but if you die and use the Return to Respite, where exactly are you going to end up? Not where your base is if not in an abeyance realm that is set as your respite.
So why not just do what the game wants you to do and make your abeyance your respite and build the base there?
FYI I was bored and tried a new character and can now confirm, your right. Abeyance are your only allowed respite place. Destroyed the old cairn (for the Puck Quest) traveled to the first new world, build a cairn, no interaction beside rename. And when i used the respite port i was back in the first place after the 3 tutorial realms.

Thats wrong. In the last three days i had my antiquarian forest realm (public/hard), deleted every day. Despite me not changing anything at the open gate the whole realm gets completely remade all the time. Either thats a bug, a server problem or the game doesnt save non respite realms.
What I described is how it is supposed to work and normally does, but yes, there is currently a bug with realms. This is the bug that is resetting people's home realms and they lose their base and all their stuff:

Not sure why it happens to some and not others though. Last I heard, 240 people lost their home base. Most were able to get it back from a backup using instructions pinned in the above message.
Create Respite Point could also be teleporting players to the wrong realm.
I havn't gotten that far where I have to set the respite point.
