Change realm difficulty to get it below 50
Both comments are accurate but let me elaborate.
The quantity of essence you get from a PoI is relative to a few conditions.
Firstly difficulty of the realm. I do not know the best combination for T1 essence or the best score you should aim for with your card combinations. What I can tell you, and hopefully this gives you an idea what to aim for, is that if I open an extreme difficulty realm with a score of 220 I will get 35 T3 essence for an absolutely basic PoI that takes 10 seconds to complete. If I do the same card combination on easy difficulty I will get 5 essence for the same PoI.
So in short there is a sweet spot for essence rewards and if you go too easy it will give you SFA.
Aim for the the point just below it changing to rewarding T2 essence and you should be fine but maybe if you can get a score of 50 as suggested above but using the extreme difficulty it might give more.. or not. 50 might be 50 regardless of the difficulty. I have not tested it but you might wish to.
Also somebody posted that you could break higher tier essence down into lower tier ones but I may have misread this and maybe they just meant you can break anything down to dust for repairs as it was in a thread discussing repair costs.
I did not come across a way to break them down manually but I did not look for it either.
Maybe you could try it and see but I do not know how to try.
Abeyance: Dust
Antiquarian, Astrolabe, Provisioner: T1
Herbarium, Gloom, Hunt: T2
Ascended Realms: T3
The difficulty (or level) dictates the amount of essence you get for each point of interest, with extreme providing the most.
In the lower left of the portal screen you have 3 options:
Realm Difficulty
Public Realm (check box)
Reset Realm (check box)
If you want to farm a realm, you need to check the "Reset Realm" box when you play your cards. Otherwise playing the same card combination (even when you click on the "Reset Portal" button in the bottom middle of the screen) will take you to the same realm you have already visited with all the PoIs solved and thus not providing opportunity for essences.
I hope that clarifies and helps in your T1 farming.
Edit: btw, it is the numerical level of the realm that also dictates the type of resources you will find. Tiers of meat, hide, wood and fiber and the kinds of metals/gems/stones.
That is correct. You get indeed more essence from a higher difficulty realm. However, certain tier essences only appear in certain ranges, like the T1. Knowing that I started seeing T2 around realm difficulty 70 it is safe t osay difficulty 50 circa is the sweet spot, as you otherwise would get T1 wherever outside your Abeyance realm until you hit the range end.
Breaking down higher tier essences only results in dust, unfortunately. I have shared screenshots here to show that to people who suddenly were confronted with the repair costs.

The higher the tier essences the more dust you get. Even doing a simple fae site can last you quite a while. And if adjusting the difficulty correctly it is a simple walk in a park to get enough to have dust for seemingly forever.
It has to do with what Main card is played.
Herbarium is my first t2,
If you want your best bang for the buck do Provisioner ex desert.
You can see all pois and get max t1 essence.
