I'd recommend submitting a bug report just in case it's something other than the standard network issues
This is an event that started happening recently.
It would be nice to see an improvement.
I have gone to the trouble of finishing my R3 axe and I am not comfortable changing to a new axe.
Perhaps the cause of the freeze may be from an axe made with enhanced ingots.
Curse of the reinforced ingot.

The above thread has your answer.
No, this bug can occur post exploit (post patch). I created a new axe last night, this morning used it and the game crashed (just once). Worked most of the time, but currently you can get this crash still with a new axe.

By "based on damage" you mean how much damage? My axe doing between 100 and 130 damage and 2 to 3 chops for a smallish tree crashed my game this morning. So how is that too much damage?
No, I think it is something more random, some kind of race condition most likely.
It is very easy to dismiss these problems as something "they" must be doing wrong until it happens to you. I was not getting this with my other character with the exploit axe. I made a new character a few days ago to see what the game would be like without using exploits. My first time in a forest provision at medium difficulty, got the crash after being there about 5 minutes.
I don't have a screen shot of it right now, could make one later tonight.
IDK man it seemed based on damage to me. The all giant melee ingot axe pick would freeze and crash. The titanium axe pick still did that but to a much lesser degree. Now with axe pick in the screenshot I never freeze at all.
I'm not dismissing anything, but to me it seems a lot like the same bug you'd get in ARK when collecting mass amounts of berries that would eventually just crash the server. Like it has something to do with the total damage happening on the server.
Ya, that is what I figured until it crashed on me with very little damage being done.
