How to make money?

I feel like I've gotten a good grasp on habitat building, however, I don't really quite understand the income in this game. I can see that each item has an 'income' category, and I have quite a bit of items on my garden, but somehow my days end in the negative even if I don't build any new habitats? Does anyone have any better understanding of how to optimize income?

variety is your friend, pay attention to how much you're getting for each plant you're planting, the more of a certain plant you have the less you get in income per additional plant, so plant everything you possibly can. Different colored flowers of the same type also count as different plants for this purpose. Also, get the upgrade to your love score, as that acts as a multiplier on your income.

Also, don't overexpand or recruit too many keepers, they all have upkeep.

Territory expansion and keepers will result in an upkeep cost, so if you've expanded too fast or housed too many keepers the cost will probably exceed your income. You might need to release some territory or delete a keeper house until you can find a balance.
