Heads up. Some guy is going around suing people who profit off of the Backrooms.

Hi, I’m the developer for The Backrooms: Mass Extinction.
Juan de Dios Gomez Angeles is a Mexican amateur writer who is trying to claim ownership of the backrooms as a concept.
He has threatened me with legal action and has said that he is compiling a list of basically every Backrooms game developer and creative to sue them.
He claims to be the creator of the Backrooms and that my game was inspired by his book that I’ve never even heard of.
Assuming this guy only has copyrighted two books, he has no legal basis for doing this, even if there are similarities, so it would be a frivolous lawsuit.
You can’t copyright names, titles or ideas. Copyright would be for the literal word for word text of his book, which none of us are infringing on.
Either way this guy says he’s already suing Kane Pixels, a 17 year old…

When asked directly:
Also are you planning on suing other backrooms creators like Kane Pixels, MattPatt, Broogli, all the other backrooms creators on youtube?
All 3 backrooms wikis?
All 35 backrooms games on Steam
How about the writers of backrooms subgenre books?

His response:
Yes, there is already a federal investigation pursuing all that People and adding New ones with links and channels. I have slready lawsuited kane and a largo list of content and video game creators

This affects every Backrooms game developer and creative and I think we should all try and notify our audiences of what’s happening, for if we need to crowd fund legal fees or something like that.

Backrooms got big, and some scummy scammer tries to profit of it, by telling lies which on the end of the liar, requires heavy burden of proof, that the scammer obviously don't have evidence for. Sounds like just some dumb moron, who is kind enough to demonstrate the Streisand effect. Maybe Dunning-Kruger, or perhaps both.

From what I can tell by limited research, this dude is sketchy af. There is evidence that this book was published this year in 2022, and the original name of it had nothing to do with the name backrooms.

I like how he says Kane Parson isn't the original author, as if anyone thought he was. The Backrooms is simply a large community effort where no one person created it, and the levels, entities, and lore are added by different people all the time. And even if he did write a book with similar concepts, you can't claim a concept. Just because someone makes a movie with a monster under their bed, doesn't mean someone else can't have a monster under their bed.

This will blow over easily, just like the Russian Andrey Duksin with SCP. And remember, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Best thing you can do is not give him attention.

Not to mention, that it seems the idea of a liminal space labyrinth, isn't a new one. Labyrinth have been a symbol, in many cultures, and they don't seem to be simple man made ones. So, not one person, no human, can claim ownership over this, as this sort of concept, practically belongs to all of us, as it is open source, and been so for well over a millennia.

Virtual gaming, like backrooms, is a concept. The movie eXistenZ, is based on and using the same concept, as The Hollow cartoon series, a virtual reality gaming world, that feels real. But makers of eXistenZ, haven't tried to get anything from The Hollow makers, because the concept is free for all. Just like monster collector concept, the usage of it, combined with ideas, makes an ip, like Pokemon or Digimon, but that doesn't mean there cant be any other monster collector games.

It's like making a car with three wheels, then claiming that no one else can, it's just ridiculous. Not sure what that person is thinking, but it cant be much in terms of activity.
