...but it died as a F2P game. This is just them bringing it back to the core fans that demanded it.
Besides: $20 bucks for a game with no microtransactions sounds great.
But yeah, it didn't work as a live service, being a game for an invested community to play is preferred.
You are missing the context that many fans have campaigned to get this game back. It is not going to be the next Helldivers 2, but it should be fine based on the passionate core fans and word of mouth.
Trust me, i know really well "what the gigantic community wants". But its not about that. Its about reality and knowing what were Gigantics Issues when it was a free to play game supported by a whole devteam actively working on the code and new features - the issues didnt go away (low playerbase/long queuetimes of sometimes over 60min) - and with a 19,99 price tag, the issues will become bigger.
Would it have been decided to actively push the development further, that would be something completely different as this would mean a marketing campaign, overhaul of features to make it 2024-fitting etc.... all of this things wont happen - and im not sure if i like putting this out on steam without making future buyers aware of the state/situation
A shame really because the potential revival is great news. But to make it B2P is a tone deaf decision.
Making online PvP games B2P is often a death sentence for them. I'm perplexed that devs still haven't learned this.
But at the same time.... It's $20 freaking dollars... For a game that promises no microtransactions. It's not gonna break the bank for most people who would have otherwise spent $20 or more on cosmetics for some other F2P game or a live service game with a battle pass.
As someone already mentioned: It already failed as a F2P game, so it's not like trying a different business model is going to hurt.
"Often", you say? I find that hard to agree to, as many online PvP games have died under the F2P/Live service model. Knockout City, Rumbleverse, Hyper Scape, Loadout, Evolve: Stage 2, Blacklight Retribution (my fav), Gundam Evolution and many others died as a F2P online PvP game with no barrier to entry. I don't think the business model has anything to do with a multiplayer game not pulling in enough active players.
