19,99 for an 8 year old "Free-to-play" game?
Question is self-explanatory: Do I understand it correctly, that 8 years after the game was brought out as a free-to-play game, you want to charge 19,99 now for almost the same experience?

Especially when back then the biggest issue was the lack of players - how is this supposed to work out? Searching a match for 60+ minutes and new players constantly running into the same pre-stacked teams of hardcore veterans - and immediately refunding the game again?

Considering, that you said on Discord, that there will be minimal development/no development at all - why should people spend 19,99?

Well perhaps if we took a moment to lay out all the details regarding Gigantic RE, maybe we could have a better understanding for the business decisions made behind this game:

  • It has been stated by a moderator on the official Gigantic: RE discord that this game will receive "little to no development"
  • All of the new content currently announced for Gigantic: RE (Two new maps, two new heroes) is content that was planned and nearly finished for the original game, but never saw the light of day (until now) due to the original game's closure.
  • The original developers, Motiga, have been gone for over eight years, and are the only ones that have a deep understanding of Gigantic's source code. Chris Chung, former CEO of Motiga and co-creator for Gigantic, did have some involvement with the creation of Gigantic: RE, but the extent of which he was able to direct the game's development is unknown.
  • Abstraction Games, the current studio developers working on Gigantic RE, is mostly know as a support team and co-development team. They are not a studio know for developing games by themselves, so unless there are former Motiga staff working at Abstraction Games (or as contractors), the chances that they'll be able to focus on adding new content to the game is slim.
  • Gigantic RE is still running on an outdated engine (Unreal Engine 3) and might not play nice with some modern PC gaming hardware (Still no word if the game will allow monitor refresh rates higher that 60Hhz, proper Ultrawide support, etc.)
  • There is currently no word of what regions outside of North America and Europe will be able to play Gigantic RE.
  • The current plans for post-launch content is an added Ranked mode and new hero skins. There are currently no plans to update the game with new heroes, maps or new game modes.
  • Gigantic RE will feature full crossplay between Xbox One + Series X|S, PlayStation 4 + 5, and PC between Steam, Epic Game Store and Arc Launcher, compared to the original version of Gigantic, which only featured crossplay between the Xbox One and Windows Store version, while the Arc Launcher version, and eventually the Steam version, had separate player pools.

Servers are quite expensive these days. But i agree that its always stupid to put a price tag on competitive games that rely on a large playerbase.

It's a finished product that's not going to have additional updates or content of significance.

Devs make this free to play before it's too late, you can always sell mtx skins and that sort of things, don't make a game like this buy to play, you'll kill it on arrival ffs.

...but it died as a F2P game. This is just them bringing it back to the core fans that demanded it.

Yeah it sounds like their whole plan was: "We have this old game lying around that some people really want to play again, but we don't want to commit to a full-on live service revival, so lets just put this game out to make and some passive income", which I don't mind.

Besides: $20 bucks for a game with no microtransactions sounds great.

It's 20 dollars for a whole game, with skins that do not cost money and updates and you people demand to be nickel and dimed with mtx. Amazing.

But yeah, it didn't work as a live service, being a game for an invested community to play is preferred.

Fans have been wanting Gigantic to return for so long. My friends and I would chat while waiting 30min-1h for a match to start. We're older now so that will be more difficult, but it is exciting to know that the game is back!

It really does go to show as to how many people are suffering from live service brain rot as to think it's okay to sell cosmetics for a third of what a full fledged game costs these day.

You understand, that with a low/non-existant playerbase in a PURE multiplayer game - you have no game at all? Doesnt matter if with or without microtransaction, if you cant find games when you want to play, you wont play.

You are missing the context that many fans have campaigned to get this game back. It is not going to be the next Helldivers 2, but it should be fine based on the passionate core fans and word of mouth.

Trust me, i know really well "what the gigantic community wants". But its not about that. Its about reality and knowing what were Gigantics Issues when it was a free to play game supported by a whole devteam actively working on the code and new features - the issues didnt go away (low playerbase/long queuetimes of sometimes over 60min) - and with a 19,99 price tag, the issues will become bigger.

Would it have been decided to actively push the development further, that would be something completely different as this would mean a marketing campaign, overhaul of features to make it 2024-fitting etc.... all of this things wont happen - and im not sure if i like putting this out on steam without making future buyers aware of the state/situation
HighLanderPony Feb 20, 2024 @ 2:22pm
Yeah, not being F2P might just put this game back in the coffin before it can crawl out.

A shame really because the potential revival is great news. But to make it B2P is a tone deaf decision.
AxiomWizard Feb 20, 2024 @ 2:40pm
If you read, it says that weapon skins and hero skins will be unlocked as you progress. So the game is not going to be a microtransaction hell.
HighLanderPony Feb 20, 2024 @ 2:43pm
Not to mention why'd anyone invest 20$ into a game that's most likely going to flop again?

Making online PvP games B2P is often a death sentence for them. I'm perplexed that devs still haven't learned this.

I mean, I get that not making it F2P does give the game a bit of an barrier to entry.
But at the same time.... It's $20 freaking dollars... For a game that promises no microtransactions. It's not gonna break the bank for most people who would have otherwise spent $20 or more on cosmetics for some other F2P game or a live service game with a battle pass.

As someone already mentioned: It already failed as a F2P game, so it's not like trying a different business model is going to hurt.

"Often", you say? I find that hard to agree to, as many online PvP games have died under the F2P/Live service model. Knockout City, Rumbleverse, Hyper Scape, Loadout, Evolve: Stage 2, Blacklight Retribution (my fav), Gundam Evolution and many others died as a F2P online PvP game with no barrier to entry. I don't think the business model has anything to do with a multiplayer game not pulling in enough active players.
