Not dead but also not popular.
DISCLAIMER THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. JUST WANTED TO GET IT OUT THERE SINCE I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF PEOPLE SAYING NEGATIVE THINGS.

Also a lesser thing, not saying you cant have a opinion, would love to hear what you all have to say. just said the first thing to basically say its not fact, its my opinion

I'm seeing a lot of people saying things like: "the game is dead" and "go back to being free to play" well to those people i just want to say that this game will probably never truly die. Even when the game was abandoned 6 years ago there was still a small but passionate community that genuinely still played the game.

I'm not saying its currently the most active or popular game like tf2 or league but i would say that there will always be a small community that is around this game, playing it and personally i like that.

That way it feels less toxic, i'm also not saying i don't want the game to be popular. I just think that both a small community and a large community have upsides and downsides and i think this game does best with a small community.

Anyways i would love to hear what you all have to say, and please don't just insult people, its not creative and just boring, at least be creative if your going to insult someone.

I've been arguing this the entire time. This is exactly the case. Anyone who saw how they billed the game (specifically the "zero microtransactions", "peer-to-peer custom matches", and "unreleased content") could tell that this wasn't taking aim at other MOBAs to try to dethrone them, but was a love letter to a community that never forgot the fun they had with it and figured they could make some money inviting them back and opening the door for others to see what the fuss was about.

Gigantic has been and always will be a niche product. There's money to be made in filling a niche, provided you have your plan accounting for the fact that there will be limited demand because, again, niche. It was never going to have a big playerbase. It was never going to have widespread commercial success. If it did, it would be to the shock and surprise of literally everyone, including those of us that were happy to see Gigantic return.

But, as with every niche, the people that don't fit in tend to not know how to handle their FOMO and feel excluded. So they'll mald and whine about how changes need to be made to it specifically to cater to them rather than just... moving on. Best any of us who enjoy the game can do is just push back on the "dead" narrative by making sure people feel welcome to join the niche. Much like the FGC did over the years they grew the communities for their various games.

yea, tbh i was there since the beginning (forgot to mention that i think) so that can maybe change how i see things. still i do think this game just fills a niche like you said. its not made to be the next League of legend or the next SMITE or the next dota or whatever. its just what it is.

also, for the micro transactions thing. i actually prefer the way it is done now. you actually have to play the game and for some god like cosmetics play a specific way you wouldn't really think of to get them. it may take time but it is more rewarding that way.

for example with me, i never loved playing voden but recently i have found a build that really just makes me laugh as i play the game.

btw, the build is full poison voden. its both the least effective thing there is and the most effective since you dont really do damage physically but you do do it mentally. i mean, with the build i can almost guarantee to give the entire enemy team a poison debuff whilst giving my allies a huge damage buff... idk if it say something but i like playing annoying stuff :stress:

I just want the servers online as long as possible, and there to be at least a good couple hundred players consistently on to play with.
Its so fun.

Its so fun.

at the moment there is a steady 600 people each day during week days and around 1000 people during the weekend so i do think its going to be staying around.

and even if not, there is a little discord server that you can always go to for more serious play.

*600/1000 people on Steam, it's on 4 other platforms - Arc, Epic, Playstation, and XBox.

If the other platforms even have half as much as Steam, that is more than enough for a long-term sustainable playerbase, and if they do that would explain the consistent 30 second queues. A third of the playerbase I play with seem to be on console, and that's potentially only half the total console players since the PS platform is not currently working.

IE: The game is doing fine population and popularity-wise, the internet is full of sad pathetic people who make poor attempts to build themselves up by putting other things down, ignore them, or better, troll them right back with facts and positivity.

Man, what I would have given for most of my favorite multiplayer games to have 600 reliable players. Gigantic hasn't even had any promotions on Twitch or wherever yet, and it's still got shorter queue times than any multiplayer game I've enjoyed in years.

The cope is strong with this one, lets assume everywhere else has half the population of steam

What happens when steam drops to single digits? :P

And thats before you forget that MMR exists and that can greatly reduce the available player pool even if there are people logged in, if they aren't in the same MMR brackets they will never get matched with each other

Look, i get you're happy the game is back but denying reality isn't going to help you in the long run

Accept that its dying and go enjoy it while you have it :P

Just try not to delude yourself

Checked forums to see if anyone else had an issue with loadouts not saving sometimes and I see all these threads about dead game when the game could easily not be dead if everyone wanting it to be free would just buy the game lol.

But in seriousness I've played a few games with people "begging" for it to go free and it's not actually because they want to play it's because they want a lower barrier of entry for using cheats/griefing. I promise you if you ever game with the people complaining in these forums it will be the worst gaming experience in your life.

but... its not dying though. yes it may not have as many players as other waaay more popular games but this is more a niche game. even if only a few hundred players are online at a time, that can be enough.

and even when the game was abandoned, it still had people playing it. servers had been set up and the there were still like 200 people playing it consistently (including me).

the game isn't mainstream so 600 to 1k players daily on only steam + any other players on console is still quite respectable.

i mean when you look at the 5k players at launch (on steam), dropping down to around 1k (on steam) isnt that bad.

so to say, the game may get abandoned but its not gonna die. there are always gonna be a small set of people that you can play with.

if it was dead, it would mean that you can no longer find people to play with (at least i do distinguish between those.)

also, just to add. some small games that are still not dead and are still being played with lots are lethal league blaze. it gets around 78 steam players daily and it is still alive.

player count and such does not make a game dead. it only dies when the fandom does and there are some really dedicated people in this community that are never really gonna let go of the game.

The game has always lacked promo imo even when I played the old version I found it completely on accident. But im sure if it got promo it would certainly blow up for sure.
