The fact of the matter is every online game, yes including the one that is your favorite, will eventually shut down forever.

The reason Gigantic shut down the first time is because the game just wasn't as popular as Motiga needed it to be in order to afford to keep it going. Gearbox on the other hand is a giant with tons of cash and tons of server infrastructure that they can use to host smaller games like this on the side even if they aren't actively making a ton of money. With the up front cost, the people who buy the game when it re-launches in april will probably have paid for upkeep costs for several years minimum, and then if the game takes off with Gearbox marketing, the game will probably become a fully-supported title later on.

I fully expect Gigantic to get a huge burst of players in the beginning and dwindle on over time as the novelty wears off for a lot of folks, then after a few years of a couple hundred people peak, go in to free-to-play maintenance mode until its entirely a money drain and then shut down again. But $20 for a game I loved to come back and be able to play it and see the stuff that was never released even just for a little while? Worth it to me.

I do ask that and I tend to avoid most multiplayer online battle arena type games because of it.

atlas reactor shut down
gigantic shut down
battleborn shut down
paragon shut down

4 times was enough. im really not looking to do it a 5th time especially with the same game.

Was literally every single online game in existence already previously shut down due to low playercount with no refund or compensation given to anyone who spent money on it, before abruptly being rereleased after a decade, still with no refunds or compensation given to anyone who spent money on the original?

If you think you're entitled to "refunds and compensation" then file a lawsuit and miss me with those stupid false equivalencies lmfao

The only false equivalence here is pretending that the game which already shut down once due to a low playercount is in the exact same situation as games with millions of players backed by multi-billion dollars companies lol. Are you coping because you know the game's gonna die within a month or something?

Your life would be so much more pleasant and enjoyable if you logged off and stopped being an overly-hostile weirdo going around to video game forums looking for people to scream at over entertainment software that you want to fail.

The pay to play model has proven in past to be unsustainable for games like this. They already announced that the game will have no micro transactions and will receive minimal development once it has launched so obviously the player count will slowly decrease over time. I imagine there will be a large amount of players buying the game at launch. But after a year or so how will they sustain income to justify keeping the servers running.

In all honesty if you enjoy Gigantic you might as well buy it. $20 isn't a lot of money and if you play it at launch you will easily get enough hours to justify the purchase.

Its like a group of cows getting told "You all get to go on vacation to the slaughterhouse" and the few cows that are like "Wait a minute, did he say slaughterhouse?" are being shouted at by the others like "You just hate vacations!" or "You just want the vacation to be bad!"

I doubt they'll get many buyers at launch. Not without a way to trial the game.

500-1k daily peak the first week would be generously optimistic.

Played this test with several friends who were ex-Gigantic players. All of them said they wouldn't pay $20, as the community would be too small to sustain.

The suits at the publisher know full well, that without a way for new players to try the game, the game's going to bleed dry after the few initial nostalgic fans buy-in. It looks like they're going for a quick one-time influx of money, then have an excuse to dump the servers a year or two down the road.

Ah yes, the pseudo-psychiatrist. Gotta have those in every thread.

I know that battleborn wasn't the best game, but I really enjoyed the campaign with friends. But Paragon died twice iirc, gigantic and battleborn were DOA and now they think they will revive gigantic by making it a paid game...

This seems like a very important question to ask, I think giving people the option to make community servers is a MUST. I already have a bad taste in my mouth finding out they they are just reselling me the same game I already paid for I need some kind of guarantee this is the last time and they wont just turn around in a year shut it down, and sell it to us again in 2030.

even if there is no one playing it and I have to get 10 people together myself I should have the option to do that
