Cannot get to the main menu???

I have the game installed and when I start it I basically get to a scene where some guys are working on a bike. I then click any button and it takes me the starting line and from there I can free ride and find challenges. I however cannot back out of there to the main menu to adjust any settings, pick bikes or even back out of the game (I have to task manager out)? My escape button does nothing at all unless I bring up the map the the escape button takes me back to the free ride. I have pushed every button on my keyboard but nothing works to get me to a main menu...What can I do to fix this as I am sure this is not correct.

It is abit weird, but 'P' is your ESC button in this game. The open world stuff is the default once it loads.
