However, the devs totally cited Wicked and Divine as one of their influences, along with American Gods and the Buffy episode Once More with Feeling.
As noted, the devs cited many sources as inspiration for the game.
- Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, the musical “If/Then”: These aren’t the usual conversational touchpoints in a discussion about a video game. But all three of those musical theater references, and many more, were brought up by the creators of the new video game Stray Gods on the latest episode of “Stagecraft,” Variety’s theater podcast.
- Both Wintory and writer David Gaider (Dragon Age: Inquisition, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur’s Gate 2), the BioWare alum who is the creative director and co-founder of Summerfall Studios, cited the musical episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” as an inspiration for the game. “I remember thinking: Oh, the music is such a great short cut to the soul,” Gaider recalled. “Can we put that in a game?”
As for the game itself, I did four playthroughs. The story and writing are both at their worst good and in places great, but, given the games Gaider worked on, I wouldn't expect anything less than good. The music is the same; at its worst good and in many places great.
For a game that lasts 5 hours, the price may seem high. It's really not considering the voice talent they got for the game because that is stacked; Bailey, Johnson, Day, etc. I did four playthroughs to get all the achievements and I still never saw but a portion of the different song paths. I know this from watching several video playthroughs in addition to my own where I saw many different song versions, and songs, I never even found, so, replayability is very high. But, 20 hrs in a game for $30 of this quality, this uniqueness? Totally worth it to me. Your mileage will vary but as I state in my review, there was a certain part in the game where if you choose a certain trait path in the song, well, it made my jaw drop. Laura Bailey NAILED it.
