Progression lost completely?
So I bought and downloaded the game immediately went it launched, and played for around two hours (completed Act I). Seeing as the game saves automatically, I went back to the Main Menu, where I saw I could 'Continue {Act II}', and saw that I could access my file through the 'Load Game' option. I exited the game and took a little break.

I want to continue playing now, but my progression seems to have been lost completely? There's no 'Continue' button on the screen, and nothing shows up in 'Load Games'... Are the devs aware of this?

I don't suppose there's any way for my to recover the progress I'd made so far? :( I've found my save file in AppData - any way I can update / copy/paste it some where and continue playing?

Hi folks!

We have an update on the save issue! To save you a click, here's the details.

Hello everyone!

We appreciate the patience you've given us as we've been investigating this save issue. We believe we have found the cause, and we're here today with a hotfix that we believe will resolve the save issues you've been experiencing.

At present, we believe the issue came up due to the way in which the game was handling initial save files - that is, demo save files had the potential to cause issues with players games if they had them, including crashes. To prevent this, the system is taught to wipe these initial saves to ensure you don't encounter crashes and an unplayable game. However, the way in which the system detects these saves made an error, causing it to identify your first new saves as potential demo saves.

This also accounts for why players do not and have not (at least from our reports) encountered the issue again. We've made adjustments to how the system checks these files and are pushing this build now.

You should take care not to load any saves from your demo playthrough as it will likely cause issues. Overwriting those saves with new games will ensure everything runs smoothly.

If you encounter any further issues, please do continue to submit via our bug report form.

CHANGES:
Fix to address save versioning incorrectly deleting saves

Thank you and enjoy Stray Gods!

We're sorry to hear you lost progress! There are some ways to recover PC deleted files, but they're pretty complicated and don't necessarily return the files.

Can you submit this via our bug report link here[6k8iky9gz49.typeform.com] so we can investigate when the team is on site? Additionally, in the interim - you can back up your save files by going to your local install folder, opening the Saved > SavedGames folders, and copying all files inside to an additional folder or location. Inserting these back into the folder should reload them as save options on relaunch.

Thanks! So, you're saying if I take the SaveGame.sav file out of SavedGame, paste it someplace else, and then reinsert it in the same folder should fix the problem? I've just tried that, but it doesn't work... (Or am I doing something wrong?)

I'll submit it through the link you sent!

If you take BOTH files in there (there'll be one with an odd name, and the SaveGame.sav file) and save it elsewhere, you then have a save back up you can drop back in the folder if they disappear again. But - being that we're not sure if the issue is that saves are being saved over, deleted, wiped, etc, that may not solve the issue! I'm afraid it's 10pm here in Australia, so it'll be a little while before the team is back at their desks, but that information via the form will help us solve the problem as quickly as possible!

Hm, there was only one file in the folder, but now that I've started a new game it does have two... Maybe this means it won't happen again, then.

In any case, thank you for the fast replies! Luckily, because what I've played so far is so good, I don't mind replaying some of it :)

I can also confirm I only have a SaveGame.sav file, no odd-named file. I'm going to assume that means my progress is actually lost then. Bummer.

Same with me. I was having my final fight and then I got kicked right when it was loading. So i logged back in and there was nothing there. my emotional 6 hour game is gone.

I'd take troubleshooting steps for Linux, there's no savegame folder in the install folder at all.

Ah, guess I'll replay in a week or two.

Just wanted to let you know that this happened to me as well.
I now started a new game and saved again in Slot 1, closed and re-opened the game and it seems that it is now saving. However i cannot find the save game location (i don't have the summerfall studios folder in my appdata) so i cannot back up my files.
Hoping this will not happen again because otherwise the game is great so far!

The files should be in
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Chorus\Saved\SaveGames

I just finished the act 1 and closed the game. After reading this post, I went back to check the game progress, and realized I lost the progress too... QAQ :steamfacepalm::dgirritated:

Exactly the same for me. If this bug gets sorted is there a way to skip through anything you've already seen/heard?

I didn't want to keep my slot 1 save file (just the slot 2 one) and couldn't find an in-game option for copying or deleting save files, so I figured I'd do it manually.

First I just backed up the entire folder to be safe, and then I tried renaming files to see what would happen. Of course what happened was that the game just wiped the saves on startup.

From there, I tried restoring the folder with my backup, but the game just continually wipes it every time it starts up.

Is this some sort of Unreal Engine anti-tampering thing that absolutely doesn't belong in a singleplayer game?

I've just tried it anew (replayed from the beginning and played far into Act II, and backed up my save file), and the same thing happened, so it doesn't necessarily stop happening on the second try.

The problem I think is that the odd-named file gets automatically erased once you start the game again. I've fortunately saved it in a different folder now (hoping I can somehow continue if the bug gets fixed), but can't seem to find a way to make it start with that file already in there... Hope it gets fixed soon.
