I don't necessarily have anything against "woke".
What i mean with millenial writing is mainly current day buzzwords, which age very badly in games in my opinion.
One dimensional characters.
The writing feels preachy instead of letting the gamer explore the idea.
There's too much quipping, no one seems takes anything seriously and the quips are often lowest fruit sarcasm.
The writing overall feels like a tumblr fanfiction.
(the reason i suspect this is because certain cheracter design choices are choices that i could see many people of my generation make. the art style is gorgeous though)
I hope this elaboration helps.
Edit: in hindsight, think i'm going to watch a bit of gameplay and base my choice off of that. thank you for your time though.
i've srtill played interactive novels but i do not think this is for me.
that said, all the more power to the people who do enjoy this, i am genuinely happy for you.
whereas once i was on the fence, it's the writing in between the songs that made me say "this isn't for me" too many sarcastic quips it kind of works on the nerves fast for me. the songs are still great though.
The RPG tag is honestly a lie. I have no idea which aspects of this game are meant to be RPG-like. It feels like a Telltale game but even less interactive somehow. It does have a certain appeal to people who can appreciate miscast actors performing low-quality music, but it doesn't have much beyond that. A lot of seemingly important plot points wind up going nowhere. There are scenes that feel like they're going to be momentous yet lead to choices that wind up having minimal effect on the overarching story. A few of the songs do have soul, but most of them really don't. The story somehow feels like it's lacking enough characters while also managing to make the characters it does have feel wasted. And Anthony Rapp was just a terrible casting choice. I like the guy, but his voice doesn't match his character's design whatsoever.
If you enjoy the music, then watching a playthrough will probably be good enough for you. But the studio already got an unearned Grammy nomination, they don't need your cash on top of that. It'll give them the false impression they've done something right.
