Can't use controllers as p1
Hello everyone,

I can't use any controllers as p1. Tried both a ds4 and a Xbox controller and neither work as p1. Any suggestions for a fix?

Any chance you have another controller plugged in?
Check the steam controller settings to see if there is another showing other than the one you've connected.

I had the same issue. My drawing tablet gets picked up by River City Girls as a controller, so I need to disconnect it before I can play the game.

My buddy has an ASUS Chakram X mouse and he has the same issue- he has to go into whatever software controls it, and shut it off so that the mouse's extra buttons and joystick aren't being picked up as some kind of emulated controller.

So check your peripherals. Apparently even a drawing tablet can cause this issue.

No, P1 is always mapped to the keyboard. If I plug another controller, it goes as P3.

Last resort would be plugging out any input devices (Keyboard, Mouse as well) and plug in the controller.
For me, both keyboard and controller were always on P1 and had to use controller emulator to create "Fake" controller first to play 2 player coop using KB and Controller.

Could you tell me more about how you managed to play two-player cooperative with a keyboard and a controller please?

I did it by using the controller emulator provided in the Parsec guide.
https://support.parsec.app/hc/en-us/articles/4407439919629-Setup-Gamepad
In the link above, find Emulating a controller with a keyboard section.

Download UCR. The guide tells to also install Interception, but since we don't need to emulate keyboard, I think you can skip it (I installed it so if it won't work, install it as well)

Follow the guide for UCR and create a profile.
Input device can be anything, we're not gonna set it to work, just need the Steam to detect the controller.
Output device needs to be controller detectable by Steam. I used Xbox 360 controller 2.
Create the profile, ignore the configuration and activate said profile.
If you see Xbox 360 controller on Steam's controller list then its working.

Now you plug in the controller you have, and play the game.
The game should use the "Fake" controller and keyboard as P1, and your controller as P2.

steam recognizes the fake controller but the game keeps detecting my controller as p1

Usually plugging out and back in the controller works for me.

If that doesn't work, open Big picture mode, boot the game, press the home button (Xbox/PS button in center), go into controller options and change the order to your liking.

The link I provided last time also shows how to do it. Find Rearrange gamepad order Method 3.

Even with this method, the game doesn't recognize the game pad as p1.

Same problem. The gamepad is recognized and I can play as player 2 with it, but I cannot get it to be player one. This is maddening.

Same problem here. Cant use my ds4 for p1. if I pair a controler it will fit to p2 and a second to p3... weird as ♥♥♥♥. I like to play this kind of game on my bed and there is no way to do it with keyboard setup.
Kai Dec 25, 2022 @ 10:14am
Your keyboard is likely always active as P1 most likely, when you don't have anything in the USB than the controller, it should recognize whichever for P1 if you use it.
For P2 it has to be a new controller after there is already a controller in, so natively, it does not support a keyboard and controller for 2 players, due to the whole 'button layout swapping.'
