River City Girls 1 and 2 use an art style that's inspired by "River City Girls Zero," a Super Famicom game that uses larger sprites instead of traditional 8-but-style sprites. Also, these games are gorgeous, so you're definitely in the minority there, OP.

I don't think the sprites are bad. It's just a different artstyle. Try River City Underground if you want something more reminiscent of the traditional Kunio look.

Both the first game in the series and the prequel look more like RCG than RCR. Idk why you're so fixated on one look in a series that has changed many times, and the one you're fixated on isn't even the original look...

Then you're bound to personal preference and treating as a valid argument just because you like a certain look, ignoring how detailed the spritework is and how charming the animations are (just look at Marian's hair for example, it flows so smoothly)
I wouldn't call a painting of Michelangelo ugly just because it doesn't have a cartoony art style that I'm fond of for example :P
