Is 2k23 good for a first time player?
I've recently gotten back into basketball (I used to watch a bit back in the 90's), and I was curious as to which NBA 2K game to get as a first-time buyer.

For reference, I'm most interested in the "My Eras" feature, since my favorite players back in the day were Larry Bird, David Robinson, Reggie Miller (Charles Barkley too, but I know he doesn't appear in games) etc. I like the idea of both playing as those favored characters, and fooling around with the simulations where players are moved around into different eras. The "My Career" feature looks neat too, but is less important to me.

Any thoughts?

Hey,
I have to disappoint you a bit Im afraid :/
The Era Mode is only avaible on Next Gen (Ps5/XBox X/S) on Steam and Ps4/XboxOne you get only the Current Gen Version of the Game.
I personally play mostly My Career and till 2k23 only the Current Gen Version.
For a first time Player I would say wait for a sale because right now the Game isn't worth the full price espacially since you were more interested in the Era Mode.
MyCareer makes fun and is better than it was in the previous NBA 2k games (2k21-22)

But keep in mind for MyCareer that it is this year far more expensive to max out your Players stats as it was before. Im not 100% sure for Current Gen but on Next Gen you need more than 400.000 VC to max out one Player. That is a huge difference compared to older Games....
So if you dont like "grinding" or dont want to pay more than the Game itself... keep away :)

If you love Michael Jordan, the Jordan Challenges do have the camera filters/rules/commentary/clothes, but it's limited to just that mode. The consoles have the whole historic eras with everyone playable from those eras.

I was initially disappointed but I really liked the Jordan challenges. But it's only a small subset so YMMV.

And as Mephasto pointed out, it's a HUGE GRIND for your MyPlayer. I don't pay for VC or anything, but I also mostly play offline so I don't mind as much (I'm the same with any sports games, be it FIFA/Madden, or something like Super Blood Hockey, etc.) but it can be hard when you're like a 60 OVR and bricking shots and can't play defense for the first few games unless you play on lower difficulties.

If you are new to 2k and dont mind playing old gen i highly recommend 2k23. Its more fun and easier for new players than 2k22

if you havent played the last games you ll like this one.. you wont have that "its the same game" feeling most people complaint about. theres no eras but the players you want to use are there in myteam. go for it. just dont go for it every 12 months.
