Bug: sound problems in video clips on Steam Deck
I keep hearing clicks and pop when playing videos on the Deck. Both OpenGL and DirectX mode do this.

Same. A shame nobody can speak on this or suggest a fix.

To fix a bug, first it has to be reported, and then it has to be replicated.

I spotted another thread on this topic, and I asked for follow-up so we could investigate,. The person reporting it had already uninstalled and asked for a refund. This one went unanswered for three weeks so it was assumed to be an isolated incident.

Neither thread has any information necessary for us to help try to replicate the issue. We have not seen this issue on our Steam Decks, so we need to get more information from you about what you have experienced.

- Which model of the Steam Deck are you using? What version is your OS?
- Are you installing the game on internal memory or an external SD card? If it's an SD card, can you offer some details on the size, speed, and brand of that SD card?
- Have you made any modifications to your unit, and if so, which ones? Did you upgrade the storage, have you added any software that did not come from Steam?
- Are you experiencing this across all videos in Atari 50, or just some? Is it just the interviews, or do you also hear it in, say, the Games Computers Play vintage video from 1973, or The Fly video under Yars' Revenge?
- Are you hearing clicks and pops in the same parts of the same videos, or does it occur at different points in playback within the same video when you watch it more than once?
- Can you offer at least a few concrete examples where you feel it's particularly noticeable?
- Would you be willing to record a little bit of this while it's happening with your phone, and pointing us to a YouTube or Dropbox video where we could see what you see? Outside of system specs, video of the problem in action is often the most helpful way to report and document a bug.

All of this information would be useful to the dev team, particularly as we are preparing our first title update right now.

I agree that it would actually be a shame nobody could suggest a fix, particularly if it is something that could be easily solved if only there was enough detail offered to help us investigate. I'm frustrated at the implication that suggests we're not fixing something because we do not care to fix it, when in fact we simply lack data to help us investigate.

So please, work with us -- give us more information and we'll sincerely attempt to address the issue.

512 GB SD, OS 3.3.3, internal memory, open GL and DirectX versions both show issues, no mods, seems to be affecting the interviews, same pops and clicks.

Its similar with what I had on my PC but mine were worse. I theorise its prbably the 4k videos on a computer that prob doesn't support it but its just a theory. It was still watchable for me tho, just less than ideal

Excellent, thank you so much for the specifics. When I told the engineers, they said "Can you get some examples?" so I am thrilled to bring these YouTube links back. I'll let you know what I learn.

Engineers spent some time this afternoon eliminating possibilities and researching. Hoping we can find the culprit and fix it, thanks to your data, Commodore! Thank you!

The videos are 1080p and we've double-checked the encoding. The team's suspicions lie elsewhere.

FYI, same issue with the vids included with the Garbage Pail Kids game. I believe that was a DE game as well.

Hello, I wasn't expecting anyone to reply to this thread and I haven't fired up Steam in a while. For info, I've got it installed on a 512GB Deck, internal storage.
The sound glitches are similar to the intentional ones that happen during the DE logo at the start - the Youtube clips above are good examples.
Doesn't always seem to be at the exact same point in the video, but it happens eventually in every video.
That didn't stop me watching all of them, though. The game is like a museum exhibit, it puts every other retro collection I've played to shame, so thankyou DE for your fine work on this.

It is, and this additional detail is very helpful in determining the issue and focusing our efforts as we find this needle in the haystack. Thank you.

Will the update coming tomorrow address any of these issues?

Hoping so, but you'll have to report back, as we were unable to replicate this bug on our own Steam Deck hardware, but the engineers did look into it.

Unfortunately, the playback issue is still there after the update.

Okay, thanks. Not the news either of us wanted to hear, but I'll bring it back to the team.
