How does plant tags work?

I just can´t seem to figure this out?
I place the plant tag sign, but it only displays one type of flower no matter where I place it, and all I can do is pick it up again.

I would have never thought of using the paintbrush for that. But it's still way too confusing for images because some of them look too similar. I would prefer if I looked at the sign and it just tell me the name, or at least let me customize it to say whatever I want.

I agree, I was hoping the signs would be more helpfull, so now I just don´t use them.

I wish it would say the plant type by hovering on the plant, that would make life so much easier
