Knights swords phase through my sword and shield

I love the game and the concept of it, however when I am fighting human enemies specifically knights their swords phase through my defense. The zombies you can touch the tip of their sword and it activates parry, but the top third of the knights go through my sword and shield like mine aren't there and they still hit me.

I've had success with aiming to hit nearer to the enemies grip, not on the grip but farther down the sword. Also I find it all to work better when you swing into their swing, basically never see a sword phase through mine that way.

I got super weirded out on the tutorial. | got my ass kicked by the first boss and I dont know what I am doing wrong. Sometimes I see sparks but I take damage and I dont know if I need to hit his axe better or from a different angle or if I am even doing it right.
