Can someone help me understand how mech combat works.
I have my mech fairly upgraded, heavy armor, heavy legs, decent guns, but I can't aim well enough and the targeting computer, that I upgraded, doesn't seem to do anything. Am I dumb or is this just how the game is?

Hold E to free-aim your guns. Be aware that your cockpit will continue to slow to a stop if you hit E while turning your V-Stalker.
The Augmented Targeting Computer automatically locks your aim onto a V-Stalker within what I'd eyeball as 30-50m. It's helpful in a bind, but be aware it will target ANY V-Stalker - including neutral/friendly ones.
So far, enemy V-Stalkers hit hard and have snap reaction/aiming times, so your best bet is to take things as slow as possible, hold E to fine-aim, burst a target down, and if that doesn't kill it, duck into cover before you get swiss-cheese'd. Mech-vs-Mech combat could definitely do with some tweaking, but you can get by with a bit of trial-and-error and a lot of patience.

Thanks I'll do my best.
V-stalker combat so far has proven to be an intel battle more than anything else - you want to do everything you can to ensure you already know where hostile VASU units are likely to ahead of time so you can get the drop on them. Protracted mech combat is insanely risky - I kind of like it this way tbh, knowing locations and cruising thru one-tapping all targets bc you remember where they are feels cool as ♥♥♥♥.

I know where they are but I can't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ aim in time without getting shredded. What the ♥♥♥♥ do I do? On the bridge I can't connect my shots because as soon as the other V-Stalker sees me I get blasted and I have no way to aim since I'm ducking in and out of cover. On the highway the second chopper destroys me and sometimes my guns don't even fire.
I am having this same experience. Lots of people telling me to take it slow, and always get the jump on enemies, which I am doing and still getting wrecked. I cant get past the city section because the final, larger mech can kill me near instantly. Even when I pre-fire the corner, guns blazing, I literally cannot kill him in the time it takes him to one tap me. I don't know if I am missing something, but this feels horrible.

Yeah me too. Like I have the 1000 armor frame or whatever it's called and the heavy legs but instead of dying in 1 second I die in 10. It's an improvement but still not enough. The on foot stuff feels great but I'm stuck in one area because of this bull.

I honestly have to resort to pixel peeking, but also having a fitting gun for the situation helps a lot. A shotty up close, a cannon for quick peeks, etc.

I find that being at zero orgone doesn't actually seem to limit me in any way, so when unsure - I spam movement. In fact moving seems to be the only thing that gives you any time in a fight, whether on foot or in the mech.

Also, I ran past the abandoned highway, forward and to the right, and got into the "Bitter Gourge". It's also tough, but you can pick up some nice guns from the mechs there and beyond. Your character needs to have enough free weight, but if you do you can just jump out and grab mech guns off the ground and bolt them onto yours.

Getting some good armour and a helmet will make you survive much longer.

are you using the strafe boosts? just double tap a or d while behind cover with your crosshair leveled to peak and get a shot off before strafing back.
If you still have trouble do the frogfrier quest in versten and grab the rocket launcher off the helicopter that spawns. It one-shots small v-stalkers and has a fast enough fire-rate to take out the bigger ones before they can get a shot off.

Make sure you kill the smaller mech that peeks you from behind when you peek that corner.
