Seem to be stuck I put the broken codex in the shrine thinking I had to do so to open the chest, opened the chest and now my broken codex is stuck in the shrine and I can't interact with it regardless of the time of day, any ideas?

The only purpose of the codex is to open that chest so no-it did its job and you can move on ;)

I thought I needed the broken cryptex to assemble the locked cryptex with the rings?

only the locked cryptex should have been able to open the chest but since it worked for you (seems to be a bug tho). Its fine cause it did its job

same area, but my altar never opened. no idea if I'm missing a piece or what, but i cant put the (locked, i fixed it) doodad in the altar.

Apparently you need to visit the altar at night.

I have the same bug. The broken cryptex is stuck in the altar. When is the next patch 🤔

I'm playing the Xbox version - the broken codex got stuck in the pillar. i thought "oh i haven't saved since, i'll restart" but then when I went back, the chest was already open and I was missing everything from inside (so the codex rings and everything I need to fix). Is there a way to reset this whole quest so people can try again? I checked my mailbox as well, nothing in there. The broken codex itself is back in my inventory, but I don't think I can fix it without those rings.

Yeah, its a bug thats happening on the gamepass version, they will push a patch fixing that, but, if you are still stuck, go check their discord and they can help you with that

Hey! Sorry you're experiencing this issue. The coming patch will allow you to grab the item you lost to the altar when you go back to it at night.

... on the Switch version here, and I completed Lost to the Sands. This is the first I'm hearing of this... so... I need to try and figure out more than just bumbling to the exit of that maze, huh? 😓

So I don't know of patch has been made yet but when I go back the altar at night it is open not locked shut anymore but nothing is in there no cryptex is this cryptex part vital to the game

The cryptex isn't vital to the main story but it is to get all achievements since it unlocks one of the buildings in your village. Could your cryptex have been sent to your mailbox? Currently, you also need 2 playthroughs to 100% the game so if it's your first one or you don't care about achievements, you can skip it without too much worry.
